Most people often think of “union-busting” only in terms of overt and even illegal tactics like termination and intimidation, but most bosses first opt for subtler, more sophisticated activities to discourage worker organizing. Enter the “persuaders,” also known as “union avoidance consultants”—professional firms that offer bosses the specialized service of spreading union disinformation and sowing confusion among the ranks of workers. TRNN Staff Reporter Mel Buer speaks with Dave Jamieson of HuffPost on the shady world of persuaders and what workers attempting to organize can expect if one shows up at their job.

  1. A business has the right to not deal with Union same with workers. I'm not interested in joining one myself. Freedom of association. I don't like the perspective that unions are inherently benevolent especially when government gets involved.

  2. The federal government needs to stay out of the citizens wage bargaining contracts. If the government takes a side with the corporations then they must work for the wages they restrict their constituents to! The government is not a business and they are employed by us with our tax dollars to keep our best interests in mind when creating laws to protect our nation!

  3. 20:56 blockchain technology gives us transparency. All receipts are counted. The problem is, who controls the Blockchain. Obviously, corporations. Receipts are hidden on purpose.

  6. The unchallenged premise here is: That union work environments are preferable to Right-to-Work states. That needs to be examined before you can have credibility on either stance.

  8. Plenty of people have had bad union experiences. Seniority seems like a big complaint. Large disengaged unions that either aren't active or maybe don't communicate their value.
    I think some marketing is needed. Just coming up with name for small member governed unions is a start. Titrating dues based on activity. Hassle-light methods for members to hold union leaders accountable. The more a worker needs a union the less bandwidth they will have to absorb absorb complex economic theory.
    Many people just don't like conflict – i am often amazed how far some will go to avoid confict.
    We need a whole focus group created lexicon & public education campaign to fight union busters. I sat through a generic union busting primer during orientation for my last job. They were quite convincing AND backed up by fellow orientees who had bad experiences.

  9. To join an established union, or not to join? Probably a lot of what it boils down to is this: threat by company is "If y'all unionize, we'll have to move this operation overseas or down to Mexico." Reality is company moving in five or ten years no matter what; if unionize now, then bigger paychecks for five years; if no union, then mid-sized paychecks for ten years. Why not maximize now? Do what companies do, which is get more $ now. If you're ten years into a 30-year mortgage, you've lost that house anyway, unless both you and your wife get two min. wage jobs each. Four min. wage jobs between the two of you will save your house. Which I've seen this done. Happened to a coworker of mine. He and his wife both struggled for three years, barely making their mortgage payments each month, finally gave up.

    Bottom line? Established unions are soooo corrupt these days in America we need new unions in each field. These unions need to have thousands and thousands, maybe even millions of members in each union. Look what France does in labor situations. And they get three months off each year, paid vacations. Why? Because they protest and strike and strike and those near them honor the strikes of others and more. French high school kids recently joined the protests against the French govt. raising the age of retirement from 57 to 59 or something like that. (cmiiw, please.)

  10. I fully support union busting,they do nothing but protect the lazy useless workers and make impossible to get a job at a unionized plant/factories.

  12. I hate unions because they advocate for political candidates just because the candidate may have promised something to the union boss.
    And that brings me to the Boss' thenseoves: They are the most corrupt in the whole organization. Not to far behind are the union reps.

    All that being said, they offer unparalleled benefits: 401k, dental, medical, vision. Blackrock(🖤) investing and shopping discounts.

    All of the benefits DO NOT justify the heads' behavior.
