Veteran Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu-Akleh was covering an Israeli raid on Jenin Refugee Camp in her official capacity as a reporter for Al Jazeera on May 11, 2022, when an unnamed Israeli sniper fired a bullet into the thin space between the back of her helmet and her flak jacket, killing her. At the time, Abu-Akleh was fleeing Israeli gunfire directed towards her and other observing journalists, including Al Jazeera producer Ali Al-Samudi, who was wounded moments before Abu-Akleh’s death.
One year later, Israeli military forces have issued an apology for killing Shireen Abu Akleh. This follows countless reports from journalist eyewitnesses, analyses by multiple international outlets, condemnation from world governments, and a joint investigation which determined Israeli forces deliberately targeted Abu Akleh. Israel’s admission thus reflects a definitive loss of the narrative battle over the course of a full year rather a morally-directed decision. Al Jazeera Front Lines senior producer Kavitha Chekuru joins The Chris Hedges Report to discuss Abu Akleh’s assassination and the status of her case one year later.
Kavitha Chekuru is a senior producer for Al Jazeera’s Front Lines, which released the documentary The Killing of Shireen Abu Akleh last December.

Learned a lot from you, thanks
Why did the Israeli police do that?
Why did they assassinate her?
Israel did it 🤦â€â™€ï¸ðŸ¤¦â€â™€ï¸ðŸ¤¦â€â™€ï¸
Rewatching 10/11/23
TY for remembering her…
FYI on the premise on the mechanics of the actual shot. Firstly, the M16 (military full-auto version of the civilian AR15) is not a very accurate rifle – at 650 feet its accuracy is 4-6" at best which is vastly short of the ~1" needed to sneak through such an opening. Secondly, the ACOG is a low power optic (1.5x to 4x – not sure which was on the rifle) – better than no magnification but in no way a precision optic for that distance. Lastly, the 5.56 NATO round is a very high velocity round and of full metal jacket construction (does not expand on impact) which means it is very likely to pass through the human body at that range.
So, all told, on average, it is extremely, extremely unlikely that this was an intentional shot and otherwise the odds point to this being harassing or cross fire at distance, or simply a random/stray shot (the 5.56 NATO is deadly up to 2+ miles). Are these far more likely scenarios any better than an intentional targeting? Maybe not, but I do think the distinction is important (war zones are hell for any/everyone at all times).
Gross injustice and criminal when the slain victims are blamed the murderers are justified. Nothing done.
It's not collusion. It's master and slave.
Since only he IDF was shooting, how can they use the crossfire, fog of war lie?
Israeli state murder
These israelis with guns are giving humans a bad name. They are only putting targets on their backs. Very sinister policy implementation going on. Those with hatred, you cannot live your lives doing harm to others.
This was a brutal murder and rotten actions from the israelis
How does the algorithm work that the real news network is never in my video feed despite being subscribed for yrs ?
The murder of Shireen Abu Akleh is a tragic but important story. Israeli soldiers deliberately took her life, and then assaulted her mourners carrying her coffin. Is there a God who could pardon such cruelty?
of course it got age restricted.
BOYCOTT, DIVEST from, and SANCTION the criminal Israeli regime. Rest in Power, Shireen Abu Akleh. #BDS
Boycott, divest from, and sanction the genocidal Israeli regime. #BDS
yes, we know. It was a year ago.
ðŸ™ðŸ™
How can we forget the murder of this amazing journalist 🇮🇪🇺🇸
I've got news for you: that helmet or flak jacket wasn't going to stop that snipers bullet, they just wouldn't.
Blatant murder.
What really happened here is obvious. Some Muslims shot and killed her and blamed Isreale snipers. Muslims kill their own children and blame the Jews. That's how Satan's children are. Islam has been murdering hundreds and hundreds of millions of people for fifteen hundred years. All Muslims are guilty of crimes against humanity.
Next step to end this violent conflict?
They left Germany and Europe because these things were happening to them. They established their European selves in the middle east and turned the same hatred and inhumanity onto the people who were in that place before they arrived. I do not understand the cognitive dissonance. They have so much hatred for people who are trying to live their lives and all they do is take from them, take their land and their homes, and their lives. It is inhumane.
Thank you for this important report.
â¤thanks for discussing this important issue
