This is one issue where the ignorance of Americans about the outside world is showing itself at its worst.
If you have ever had to live and interact with gypsies, you would not only support what Salvini is doing, but you would be calling for much harsher measures (such as what a certain infamous German politician tried to do once upon a time).
If, on the other hand, all you know about them is what various "human rights" organizations, whose primary goal is to obtain enough funding to support their own cushy existence, are telling you, it is understandable why you might be outraged about this.

Guys, we have to support the Italians. Without them, Italy is no longer Italy. It is NOT fascist to support the majority of the population. Yes, it must be hard being Roma, but they are known for high theft & living without papers. You do not know much about Roma until you live near them.

Also, Italians hate the Sinti and Roma. Like 90% of Italians deeply hate this minority. There are few clumsy attempts at integration and every time one such attempt fails there's the outcry "see, they can't be integrated!".
Salvini's popularity will rise if he reduces the number of Sinti and Roma in Italy.
Fortunately, for now at least, laws forbid WWII-style concentration camps.
