Totally disingenuous to use loopholes to spy on each other's citizens. It's illegal, and the spies involved should see trial for treason given that are systematically and deliberately assaulting democracy and liberty in order to protect those whom these journalists expose – i.e. Mafias, war criminals, genocidal mass murderers. It's this double standards. Intelligence agencies may be limited what they do domestically, but seldom what they do with foreign information. And when you have allies, you share information.
What is wrong to do in one country, should be wrong to do in another country.
There's a simple remedy for this type of "hostile intelligence" gathering. Arrest him on trumped up charges, force him into exile in a friendly consulate, take away his protection by buying off the friendly country, get the US or the UK to arrest him, and let him rot in a high security prison. Simple.
