Like Frito-Lay, Nabisco, John Deere, and Heaven Hill Distillery, cereal giant Kellogg’s has seen consumer demand skyrocket during the pandemic, reporting profits of $1.25 billion in 2020. To meet this demand, many workers in Kellogg’s plants around the US report pulling 12-16-hour shifts seven days a week, leaving little time for anything outside of work beyond sleep. But the creation of a two-tier employment system in 2015 has meant that newer employees in the lower “transitional tier” are earning significantly less than their coworkers for doing the same work. Demanding that the company raise the floor for all of its employees, Kellogg’s plant workers in Nebraska, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee have been on strike since Oct. 5.

In this special video edition of Working People, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez discusses the ongoing strike with Dan Osborn, who has worked at the Omaha, Nebraska, plant for 18 years and currently serves as president of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM), Local 50G.

  1. They do the same to the security guards that work 12s and holidays. If you get sick you have to use vacation time or not get paid. Get no sick days at all

  2. Be interesting to see what the management contracts cover. This stupid as the more workers have the more to spend. Day labour is the end game. The old system of labor.

  3. Kellogg's Master Contract Agreement for BCTGM legacy union employees average pay was $35.26 plus benefits. With overtime most are making average $120,000 per year in 2020 (Kellogg's reports). Loaded labor rate was over $72/hour, with benefits the each persons compensation is over $250,000 per year . Typically work weeks are average of 52 to 56 hours. 90% of the time employees volunteered for the overtime hours, Sundays are double time.

  4. A great discussion about solidarity and brotherhood. Keep strong because your struggle is necessary to keep America strong. Never give up, never give in . Justice for workers!

  5. Stop treating you private sector job like its government work! If you don't like your job fine find another one. In other words, get a real job!!!

  6. I've always been a militant to inequities so eff em, start tearing down their factories till none are left. They can eff off to Mexico. We don't need modern day slave runners.

  7. American Greed. The Exuctives get their money, workers don't. If a company is making billions in profits but not compensating the workers, yes that is a problem. I say, Shutter down, boycott the brand.
