LA strippers are fighting for a union – Everything Law and Order Blog

On March 18, dancers working at the Star Garden Topless Dive Bar in North Hollywood, California, presented a petition to the owners of the club “demanding an end to retaliatory firings and bad club policies that put their safety at risk.” The next day, dancers were locked out of their jobs and told they could only meet with management individually, not as a group. In response, the workers have turned the lockout into a picket and a unionization drive that could have major implications for workers in strip clubs around the country. TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez speaks with Reagan, one of the dancers at Star Garden who was unjustly fired and who is fighting alongside her coworkers to unionize with Strippers United.

  1. Honestly. This only happens in California. Also, when they are all out of a job, they can thank their Union for that. Hope the dues are worth unemployment!

  2. Have seen this same scenario over the years.
Dancers are considered Independent Contractors & have zero chance of organizing.

  3. Still yet to watch this in full, but first thoughts aside from Workplace Safety & Conditions, is paying a Base Wage with money from Tips & Dances as additional earnings.

Not sure about the US, but in my location, Dancers only take home what they earn from Stage Shows or Lap Dances/Tips, after the House takes its percentage. Even a minimum wage is an improvement & more skilled dancers can potentially move up a Pay Tier – it would be reflective of the personal commitment Dancers make to Train & Advance their skills & Pole Tricks, and provide motivation for other Dancers to advance their skills as well.

The current "Fend for yourself" set up means that even skilled Dancers may not earn as much as someone with minimal or next to none skills. Some girls can't even climb a Pole safely & that's definitely a Workplace Safety issue as very serious injuries can occur with Pole's if you don't know what you're doing. Such changes will also assist in standardising Pole skills when it comes to Teaching, Clases & Workshops, providing much more clarity to these Businesses on what their Students require who want to use their skills to earn an income.

I think a supportive & informed HR department is also required to provide the appropriate support or referrals for issues which may arise in their Workforce, particularly in light of the stigma & disrespect wider society has towards dancers.

You don't send a Sex Worker in a Brothel to a Religious Health Service, but to a Service who is experienced working with that specific Population & their specific needs.

Also 12+ hour shifts in 8 inch heels with minimal downtime is just plain disrespectful, so issues like that also need to be taken into consideration.

At the end of the day who wants to go to a Club & see miserable Dancers with a cut throat attitude, essential just to survive their shift? Customers generally want to see Dancers & Bar/Table Staff who are genuinely HAPPY & want to be there, it just lifts the entire environment for everyone – and ostracises customers who are just plain Nasty. Never underestimate the power of Peer Pressure & social exclusion.

A unionised workforce for Dance/Strip Clubs is a Revolutionary concept & anyone who doesn't back such an improvement really needs to question why they're even involved in the industry in the first place, since obviously they are better off occupying themselves with another activity.

  4. Back in the day when it rained outdoor Construction workers usually ended up with these young beautiful women. Wonderful conversations while waiting for their next go around.

  5. From the top to the bottom of this joke of a society the dynamics of disrespect for others is the same. Scumbags r dictating policy everywhere. Oh and I'm not talking about the employees of this entertainment sector here, they provide a sexy inventive experience and there is nothing wrong or lewd or dirty about it until the owners of these establishments force them into those unethical corners.

  6. B!tches & Hoe’s trying to unionize. YOU CANT MAKE THIS SH!T UP… SMH 🤔🤦🏾‍♂️🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

  9. lol, go ahead and unionize yourself outta business….
because all the things strippers say they DONT do, they actually do to make there money lol

  10. I'm very glad to see this issue coming back again, I wish for better outcomes this time around.
Just for reference, I was kind of surprised to learn that these little clubs get away with charging the dancers as when I was young, a million years ago, they used to pay the dancers to come to work. It wasn't much, ~$40 p/shift, but the dancers typically made $100 – $400 in tips. The clubs made their money selling overpriced drinks and they made a lot.
I'm also surprised that the clubs allow anyone to record in the club, especially in the LA area.

  11. This was great. For years I worked part-time in retail and got the sense at times customers treated my kindness as some sort of romantic transaction. It at times made me uncomfortable and worried I wouldn’t make a sale if I set boundaries. Good for y’all standing up.

I like what she said about resisting that language of self-care as an excuse not to get involved. At some point, you’re going to need to use the energy you have to make a difference.

BTW, cops are only “supportive” because they know there’s a spotlight on them right now. I’ve heard this at other direct actions where cops claim they don’t want to be there. Don’t fall for it. They weren’t like that two years ago when they were wailing on half of the country’s protesters.

  12. And yet…. Wouldn't this bring up the subject about prostitution. Why is it not legalized? This is the way to empower those women who are in a bad state to make themselves business owners and be able to legally call the cops. Prostitutes, escorts, strippers all go through the same issue when calling the cops. The typical…. Well you probably asked for it. Not all cops will be like that but society sees these women as damaged individuals that are cannot be saved so why bother helping them. This is so wrong and let's face it, it's a trade that will always be present. Legalization brings other issues however it removes a huge income from the black market who often uses human trafficking as a means of recruitment.

  13. Do the entertainers in California even want to work for the clubs as employees? I thought they were all angry they lost their independent contractor status and fled to Portland, Las Vegas and Texas.

  14. The clubs made the mistake of thinking the women would be too embarrassed to go public and organize. Why should they be? As she said, this is an entirely legal form of entertainment. If Boogie Nights could be made 25 years ago, I don't see how the club owners thought they could shame anybody today for dancing. Serious fim and cabaret/erotic dance has fewer guardrails in Europe.

  15. I'm not surprised these clubs get away with this. I'm sure many of thier patrons are the officials who should be looking out for these women

  16. Shout out to this network for being one of the few notable anti-imperialist, leftist platforms that gets sex work right. Been very disappointed recently with a lot of leftists on that front.

  17. it's a job. period. worse than some jobs, better than others. wage theft is wrong, regardless of what you think of the job.

  18. What kind of person could take advantage of such beauty.
Don’t no how another hand in the cookie jar is going to make conditions better for all.
    Good luck.

  19. Max,
You’re one of a kind. If we are to win, it will be in many ways thanks to you…
    Thank you Reagan!

  20. sex workers need do the same! i don't do it anymore but I used to enjoy them ( strippers )at their workplace, thank you for being friendly. never spend time with a sex worker still do support their line of work I think it's important in our society and needs to be look at respectfully.

  21. this is great … given america is a morons paradise .. one has to invest into exploitation of women and then form unions to fight for … Itself defeats the purpose.
Also this mainstream media is pathetic – woke – and exploiting any union fever it can .. it does not really care about any of these women or their misery.

  22. 7:30 involuntary work – the connection to prostitution and slavery – resesrch the Nordic Model, which helps ALL these vulnerable women
