On March 13, 2017, officer Matthew Rhodes of the Euclid Police Department in Ohio killed Luke Stewart, an unarmed African-American man who was sleeping in his car when Rhodes and his partner Louis Catalani first approached. Without announcing themselves as police officers or turning on their dashcams, Catalani and Rhodes aggressively tried to wrestle Stewart out of the car, escalating the situation with every passing second as Stewart panicked and put his car in drive. Within minutes, Stewart was on the ground, dead, with three bullets in his chest, one in his wrist, and a fatal shot to his neck. Under the shield of qualified immunity, Rhodes has avoided both a grand jury indictment and a judgement against him in a wrongful death suit filed by Stewart’s family.

In the first installment of the mini-documentary series State of Injustice, executive produced by Black Lives Matter Cleveland, filmmakers Roger Glenn Hill and Brian “BZ” Douglas investigate the killing of Luke Stewart and the fight to hold the Euclid PD accountable for their actions. State of Injustice is a documentary series showcasing the systemic failures of Ohio law enforcement across the state. With permission from the filmmakers, TRNN is honored to share the initial three-episode season, which explores police abuse in the city of Euclid, Ohio, with our audience.

  1. The punitive damages from the lawsuit need to be large enough to bankrupt the City of Euclid, Ohio. That is the only thing that will stop this sort of behavior.

  2. As a retired LEO, I don't even know where to begin on how wrong all that was. I will try. First Mr. Rhodes was participating in Constitutionally protected activity. Second, the decision to "pull him out of the car" was made before the cops arrived at the scene. The only thing they did right was tap on his window. They needed to make contact with the driver to make sure he was okay. But as soon as they did, they did not say anything. They just attempted to yank him out of his car. They had no reason to suspect he was or was about to commit any crime. Any other reason for him to be there is completely legal. Cops like those are the reason I tell people I am a retired whorehouse piano player.

  3. This is 1st degree murder. Waking someone from sleep immediately there are 2 people attacking you. With brite lights in your face blinding you. No call out identifying you as police. He did the only thing anybody else would have done fight for your life.

  4. Deff murder…1st degree..just because a unarmed man resisted a so called peace officer who declared war on a man jaut cause….?..

  5. Straight up murder IMO.
A man who has not committed a crime is shot by an officer who made no effort to identify as a police officer, who has made up his mind to take the man out of the car for no lawful reason.

    Abolish qualified immunity

  6. ''Pull him out because some sort of crime had been done OR further investigation was needed."
These are words of the oath-breaking, perpetrating police. No proof, no evidence, no probable cause and ALREADY planning to violate a citizen's rights BEFORE they even got there. Fvck them forever.

  7. Dont let theee racist bastards separate us, theyd kill a white person and have! Thier evil overrides thier racism. WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!

  8. My friend said if it was his brother that he would kill the cop, i said i understand your anger but your brother wouldn't want you to give up your life, he said he didn't care and that he would kill the cops siblings too, these cops are driving people over the edge!

  9. Btw the supreme court really screwed us good with this ruling that allows cops to order citizens out of their vehicles for any or no reason at all!

  10. Cops will mace, beat, taze, assault, batter and kill us, thats to be expected! #1 its in thier nature but more importantly #2 the d.a,s and judges allow perjury and back cops even when they know they're in the wrong, i don't even blame cops anymore, they're evil and cant help it, us citizens only hope lies in thier higher ups and they're the ones who failed us!
