May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is celebrated around the world by labor unions, socialist parties, and anarchists. May Day’s origins go back to the 1886 Haymarket Affair, when hundreds of thousands of US workers walked off the job, and 40,000 went on strike in Chicago for an eight-hour workday. Despite its origins, May Day is largely unknown in the US today. TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez joins Rattling the Bars for a discussion on the history of May Day, and how the persecution of organizers in the wake of the Haymarket Massacre highlights the importance of extending solidarity from the labor movement to the fight to abolish the prison industrial complex.

  1. Interesting topic around prison. Prison is suppose to be miserable. The reason is, it's an extreme punishment. It should be extremely horrible and miserable. Then maybe you won't want to go back.

That being said, there are a lot,,,, of reason people can go to prison that they should never have been sent to prison for. But that is the conversation I believe, that should be had. But the conditions, should be strenuous.

As for socialism or communism, it's all been tried. It doesn't work and I creates far worse living situations than capitalism has provided. Any system that relies on a government will always be doomed to fail, not to mention creating far greater divides between the social classes. Capitalism isn't perfect, but it is FAR better than socialism or communism.

  2. Recently I've been telling people the best way to avoid a strike is to show up with huge numbers at events on May 1st and Labor Day.

The money is always watching! If we can't support those holidays then we'd never be able to maintain a strike action.

    Peace love and solidarity!

  3. That is why they seek to make everyone go to jail /prison for irational reasons, to devalue your personhood, they are drooling over the proposal of eliminating human rights all together.

  4. May day isn't what you think it is and the only way you'll get what it is you're fighting for is when this shit show collapses. Open your eyes.

  6. Hello from Yonkers,N.Y. The book Labor’s Untold Story by Richard O. Boyer is a excellent book if you have a opportunity read it,tells all the struggle of the labor movement.✌️❤️

  7. I hadn't thought about how prisoners are missing out on social security, and cannot possibly accrue enough credits if they are released after long sentences

  8. There is a distinction between the ancient holiday, and the appropriation of the term/date "May Day".
The ancient sacred holiday May Day is the true holiday.
This discussion is without knowledge of May Day prior to the appropriation of May Day as a Labor Movement holiday.
May Day is a celebration of Nature, it is a celebration of Spring. People came together, little girls wore flowers in their hair, and carried baskets of flower petals. Children sang and danced around The May Pole.
You are referring to the Labor Movement's using May 1st as a day of recognition of Labor Rights.

  9. If we can eliminate discrimination against the formally incarcerated (at least) on the basis that the people who have the most to add to the conversation regarding how we can improve as a nation are the people that have experienced the worst of it. If their voices were heard, things would change in an instant.

  10. From the UNICOR Repatriation brochure: "Investing in America"
    "UNICOR represents the

best that American manufacturing has to offer.

Work with UNICOR today, and help bring jobs back

    to the U.S."
    🙁

  11. Great interview, I’ve tried to spread awareness of May Day but the USA has done a very strong job of removing May Day from people’s minds

  12. I just worked in a sheltered workshop for a week jigging optical fiber guides and addressing mailers for no money at all. It was: "return to work" training in Canada

  13. Just another ugly ass truth for everything this trash nation represents! Just sweep the truth under a rug and teach nothing but lies! The truth? Shall set us free!!

  14. Cameron does real News have any episodes on those exact companies/corporations who are exploiting prison industrial complex? Like Whole Foods you mentions.
