In March 2023, U.S. Climate Envoy John Kerry met with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in Oaxaca, Mexico, to discuss U.S.-Mexico collaboration over renewable energy. It was announced that the United States would commit to invest in at least 10 new wind and solar parks in the region — already one of Latin America’s top wind power hot spots.

But there’s a problem. These wind farms there have been largely constructed and run by foreign transnational corporations. Residents say that while on the surface these wind turbines are generating clean energy, they have been disrespecting communal land rights, stiffing local residents money owed for renting their land, and refusing to benefit the local community with discounted or subsidized utility rates. There are also major concerns for the local environment.

  1. Newer models of turbines dont make as much noise. what they need to do is hire some of the poeple to work on the windfarm from the community.

  2. One nuclear plant would occupy a few square miles and triple the MW output of all these wind turbines combined. Not to mention hundreds of highly skilled technical jobs. Nuclear will save humanity.

  3. They maybe didn’t tell you that their leaders are the ones that keeping all the resources that this big transnational companies give to the society.. I hear the story of one leader that demand 5 million of pesos to one of this big companies that are ruining the lands, he ask the money for the community of Santo Domingo for social infrastructure the company gave this money to this “leader” and in the meeting with the people of the community he tell them that he had obtain 2 million for the social works … the reality of this are that the same people of the community are extorting this big companies and at the same time making themselves look as a victim of them.. the ignorance of the people is exploited for this “leaders” more than this big companies..

  4. Local use of solar and wind at the place of consumption. Wind farms and solar farms are just profit centers. You can do off grid solar with or without batteries. Used solar panels are cheap. The batteries are not. Just replace the load while the sun shines.

  5. That's criminal, how American can invade their neighbours and intimate the residents into complying to their demands. It's no wonder they make enemys all over the world

  6. LOL!!! Yeah if the woke mob actually knew what they incessantly parrot from the Huffington Post and the like they would be dangerous.

  7. Renewable energy is the future; however, corporate control is not. These turbines should be owned and operated by and benefit the local community and be scaled to their needs. Capitalism will not save us – even Green capitalism

  8. Wyoming has the best cradle to grave and land restoration rules for wind farms. They have a lot of experience. They followed what they did in strip mining coal, same simple rules.

  9. What happen to the current Mexican president I thought he preferred nationalizing the Engery sector similar to the lithium

  10. We have the technology to back coal more efficient or develop new nuclear power plants that don't use uranium
Wind turbines are not the solution they require constant maintenance

  11. How much oil are these turbines dropping? I think greed is what's hurting people, the wind turbine might not be at fault here.

  12. Doesn't pass smell test. No one loses their hearing from wind turbines – that is a preposterous claim. While corporate abuses and political violence are famously endemic to Mexico, the complaints here are not much different than the demonstrably groundless chatter we hear in the US, ginned up by a fossil fueled social media disinformation machine. This remarkably one-sided report is yet one more example of muddle headed lefties acting in the service of the fossil fuel agenda. Moreover, I did not hear your proposal for an energy solution. Would that be more coal, gas, oil or nuclear? Do better you guys.
