I'm an RN who quit Hopkins and has never looked back… Recruiters still calling/emailing 🙄. I will drive Lyft before I go back to the bedside! I have a physician friend leaving soon… Very shady management practices and the worst pay of all the hospitals but they're all terrible. Hopkins accountants are the Best of the Best for sure when it comes to shady business. Geniuses…Nurses wanted to be salaried so they said ok. You will work an "average" of 40 hours per week over a 6 week period which is 240 hours total. One week you may work 60 hours (5 shifts) but that's not considered overtime because they figure the next week you may only work 24 hours (2 shifts) but then you're on call (which at the time I was there was about $12 just to be on call) and your life gets completely turned upside down. First of all, I'm trying to recuperate from the five 12-hour shifts I worked last week. Second of all I need a life outside of work. Racist, ageist, uncivilized, and "savior complexed" colleagues and administrators descend on East Baltimore from the Baltimore suburbs or other nice areas and say nasty things about or do well intentioned but culturally insensitive things towards the patient population and colleagues. Most of Hopkins Hospital can be a turbulent and uncivil environment to work in for people who actually care about patients and their colleagues. An ICU nurse committed suicide earlier this year or late last year and they're being hush about that. Nurses don't make a lot of money for what they do unless they do overtime. A lot of money to me is minimum of 100k/year. Overtime starts after 44 hours or something like that. I did overtime once for my coworkers and never again. The racist charge nurse gave me the worst assignment and felt justified because I was making more that night. That's all the nurses talked about that night was how well I was being paid. We should all be paid like this on the regular. So stupid! Parking costs are through the roof. I was able to bike or shuttle in but in winter… Yea. And Baltimore is not a cheap place to live once you factor in you only want to live in certain neighborhoods (The White "L"…Google it. That's a real place) If you have a child you will most likely turn to private schools starting around middle school because you won't have a choice. I repeat Baltimore is not cheap…think again. The money that JHH and Holy Cross Hospital of Silver Spring (yes I lumped them in there, left that cesspool also) spends to bust union activity they can spend on their regular nursing staff. The money they spend on travel nurses they can spend on their regular nurses. These hospitals paying travelers $45-$60/hr. If they added even a quarter of that to their regular staff salary, people who be happier. But nope. I honestly believe Hopkins has created it's own eco system where they are alright with the "churn". People are going to come through there because of their name. But they'll go after a short time. But they'll always come. Hopkins doesn't want long term employees which is why they have no pension anymore. It's the Millennium Package or something bogus like that. I'm a millennial but I'm not dumb. The money that they spend settling lawsuits they could actually have done something preventative. It's not just Hopkins. All the hospitals are not living up to their potential which is why I'm done with them all. Nurses need to look out for one another. They say "nurses eat their young" and it's hard to disagree. I'm not stating the union is perfect but if you expect the hospital to ever be fair, you are wasting your time and naive. The union is like a marriage where you will have disagreements with your spouse but you are stronger together regardless but in the end the loyalty is there. The employer is not your friend! Why haven't they followed suit and set their own nurse:patient ratios like in California since Hopkins is so forward thinking? No, they're money-thinking. JHH and Hopkins School of Nursing LOVES talking about the Josie King story as if they are actually taking responsibility for the error and doing a whole lot to prevent future medical errors. It's just smoke and mirrors. Time to unite and stop with this warped sense of loyalty to these employers. They're getting away with this crap because nursing is a mostly female profession and a lot of women won't negotiate. Employers rely on your empathy for others and expect complacency so they can exploit you. Employers will get rid of you in a heartbeat and at Hopkins will ask nurses for 4 weeks resignation notice. And anyone who gets intimidated by these clowns for your participation in union activity, it's your payday. SETTLE FOR MORE!
That woman bashing the unions probably watchers CNN and hears that unions are bad. This nation was built with unions having the workers back big time. The media hates unions because corporations are their bosses.
NURSIES WORK THEIR ASSESS OFF LONG HOURS AN NOT PAYED ENOUGH MONEY FOR WHAT THEY DO
Good work. Good reporting. Nurse in Rocky Mountain states where nation's lowest market wages have always intentionally depressed competition. Keep up the struggle JH nurses. Moreover, it's patently obvious that the featured speaker against the union represents a political view/ideology rather than an economic view. Worked with peers for decades who are overtly right-winged and that nurse mirrors their demeanor and language uncomfortably. For them, their ideology always is just below the surface. And it's not pretty sometimes. But we all learn to put up with it and never let it go anywhere. Just let them make their remarks and just move on. We're use to it. Keep up the good fight. Be RN's. You know – "real nuisances." 🙂
Hi, Derek J. definitely supports the union effort 🙂
It's great that the donation was disclosed at the end of the video. Good stuff.
