The prison-industrial complex has many ways of turning the incarceration of human beings into a profitable business model. In New York state, new regulations targeting care packages for prisoners show this logic at work. Friends and families of incarcerated people can no longer send packages containing food to those inside, and are now limited to sending two “non-food packages” a year, purchased from pre-approved, third-party vendors. In this episode of Rattling the Bars, Mansa Musa interviews writer Molly Hagan about this draconian new policy and her recent report for The Appeal, “New York’s Prison Package Ban Places New Burdens on the Incarcerated.”

Molly Hagan is a writer based in New York City, who has taught creative writing at the Women’s Prison Association.

  1. The food in the chow hall in nys is actually pretty good and there's certainly enough served at every meal.

  2. It's not just about making money. It's also about not losing money. Having to pay staff to keep intercepting and prosecuting contraband sent in the mail is expensive and tiring. So of course, the government is going to take the path of least resistance and simplify things, all the while making their friends rich. Those inmates who abused the process are really the ones to blame. See what stuffing cellular telephones in jars of peanut butter, knives in candy bar wrappers and marijuana in oregano containers gets you? If you wanted to keep the government honest, you gotta lead by example.

  3. Kickbacks Kickbacks amen!

TRULY THERE IS NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN, KING SOLOMON…

SADLY the masses….even all of us to a degree have been turned into zombies…

Thankfully more and more are waking up.

I just worry that that notorious "they" have over the past 50 to 70 yrs (especially) successfully managed to weaken their target — our minds! …

We've all been deceived and the vengeance belongs to One!

  4. My heart broke a little more for prisoners when I heard these inhumane changes! …

How are care packages coming from 3RD party vendors versus their loved ones at all the same! …

And who gets a kick back from the use of third party vendors!? …hmm lemme take a guess.

The same Ole "smuggling contraband" excuse is nothing short of laughable!

    Politics!!! …greed power and control…

and heads up… the Day is Nigh ALL will be judged accordingly.

  5. Apparently nobody on this channel has ever watched a bugs bunny or tom&Jerry cartoon!

Welcome to the 19th Century, NY!

  6. If everyday is punishment? Then how can we make prison punishment worse? Im appaled. Maybe make everyday life better? All of us have done deeds if not legally, then morally, worthy of punishment.

  7. The wardens, parole boards, judges, etc all make money off the prison system, and the commissary is a huge part of that money making enterprise. This forces inmates to spend more on the prison commissary increasing the profitability of the prison. It wouldn't surprise me if these same people in charge of the system benefit financially from the "approved vendors" by being invested or whatever. Humans ARE chattel property, and our for- profit "justice system" and the financial conflicts of interest of those in charge of it, is PROOF of that.

  8. DONT HATE ON THE BUSINESS ( PLANTATION WITH COMPANY STORE ) MONEY HAS TO. BE SPENT. THRU. THE BUSINESS IN ORDER FOR IT TO EXIST …… PURPOSE OF SENDING PEOPLE TO PRISON IS TO INCREASE STATE

  9. Wrong. Prisoners get three nutritional meals a day. With fresh vegetables.
Many states stopped care packages decades ago.
There's too much abuse with smuggling.

  10. I’m 70 years old, I’ve been in Reformatory, State, and Federal Prisons, just shut up and do your time, and go straight when you get out if you don’t want to go back!

  11. Are we supposed to feel bad? Don't commit the crime, if you can't do the time.
Kids these days WANT to go to Prison.

  12. Thank you, Molly! And you too Mansa!
I emailed Hochul, FWIW, telling her to GET RID OF THE BAN.

  13. Fyi, cooked food is not allowed at any prisons in Scandinavia… the system has to provide everything neccessary. This is implemented for security reasons. Ppl can hide drugs and other type of banned substances in prisoners food. It should had been banned long time ago.

  14. I can only speak on South Carolina Department of Corrections as I did 3 years in prison there. The guards are the only source of contraband. The inmates literally have their "homeboys" apply for and get jobs as correctional officers. A significant portion of the officers are literally gang members. Bloods, Crips, etc. I'm talking it is so blatantly obvious that I have even seen multiple guards with gang tattoos that are 100% visual, with no attempt to even try and conceal. The craziest thing I saw was a guard that had blood marks tattooed on his forehead. The U.S. prison system is beyond broken. Complete joke.
