(Content Warning: bullying, harassment, suicide.)
In September 2021, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez spoke with the family of Evan Seyfried about a lawsuit they filed against grocery giant Kroger, which alleges that Evan was bullied, harassed, and sabotaged by store managers Shannon Frazee and Joseph Pigg to the point that he suffered a “transient episodic break†and took his own life. It’s been one year since Evan committed suicide, and while the Seyfrieds struggle to pick up the pieces, family friends, community members, and volunteers have come together to honor Evan’s life, demand accountability for his death, and address the scourge of workplace bullying. In this interview, Alvarez speaks with Jana Murphy, an organizer of the Justice for Evan coalition and a close friend of the Seyfried family, about the fight to hold Kroger accountable and the national day of action planned for Wednesday, March 9.
If you or someone you care about has contemplated suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 or text HOME to 741741 to reach the Crisis Text Line. Crisis counselors are available 24 hours a day.

In California, workplace bullying is illegal and is a felony. Employees who bully coworkers will be arrested and prosecuted and put in jail.
Those Kroger employees are murderers
He should have gone to the police.
Totally evil. They're Satan's servants who did Satan's work.
This wasn't bullying, it's was terrorism.
Murder with a capital M
I work at fry’s here in Arizona and it’s owned by Kroger. This company is horrible to work for. Constantly being micromanaged and treated like trash by the managers.
A friend of mine is autistic.
He works at a Kroger location known as king Soopers in his town in Colorado.
He just told me his started taking advantage of him as of last year a week after his birthday.
He’s become more depressed because what they are doing to him
Anyone who mistreats a person at work is trash. The person you’re targeting wouldn’t even look at you if they didn’t have to be with you by working with you. You’re disgusting trash and I hope you have the exact same things happen to you!!
Kroger is guilty of bullying their employees and pushing them to suicide
This explains why I was having issues with my department manager when I worked at Kroger for several years, it's all because of Rodney McMullen, there were times whenever my coworker is being lazy or doing something they shouldn't be doing I'm the one that gets blamed for it, Kroger is the worst company I've ever worked for, I didn't realize how horrible it was working at Kroger till I started working at my current job, interestingly many of my co-workers who I've worked with left Kroger within months after I did.
I'm bullied in almost every job I have now. Thank God they are trying to fight it.
Oh wow. I'm terribly sorry! I was also bullied by the same company in another location. They started on me right away and lied about things they say I did , but I did not.
I told them where to go and quit. I'm glad I did. I wonder how many others they did this too?
I am at Kroger employee, I did not know Evan as he was not at my store but he was in my district. This is absolutely heartbreaking. I myself have been subjected to, and I even had proof. Nothing was done about it one person involved was promoted not long after
A great 19-year record, and Kroger ignored his complaints? I would not let any of my kids work there. I will not shop there either if they treat their employees like that.
The ceo's should start bring held accontable. Criminal charges should be brought against them.
This does go on way more than known. Exactly why some people commit murder or suicide sometimes both.
I got bullied at school and at work I'm still alive.. This is so weak this world no America Idiocracy.. But when we try as a Nation of people wronged we can get Reparation..
So quit why take the abuse. Family looking for easy pay out.
The family will lose. I hate to say it, but they have no proof Kroger caused this other than word of mouth.
Not taking Kroger's side AT ALL, but I've seen this happen and had this happen to me many times. The company rarely ever faces liability in these claims.
I'm sorry Evan is gone, but the family won't win this one. If they're lucky they might get a settlement.
FFS, will you just say what happened? You rambled for 30 freaking minutes without saying what actually happened. You’re not gonna get justice if you can’t tell people what happened without going off on a bajillion stupid tangents no one cares about.
This case deserves a better spokesperson.
I worked at the Krogers on Plymouth Rd in Ann Arbor, MI till 2010. The manager bullied me and called me a liar when a customer told me she was sorry when she found out my Dad had died! She told the customer I was lying about it! After that I wanted to hurt myself! I had to check myself into the hospital because of it! She found out about it and then FIRED ME a week later! The union didn’t even help me get my job back! She even started fighting my unemployment
Kroger has been sued by many of its employees. It seems like a company that has built up a lot of terrible karma.
