“Prison food in the United States is a public health and human rights crisis,” the Maryland Food & Prison Abolition Project states on their website. “By weaponizing the experience of eating, the state transforms one of our most basic needs into an everyday form of violence. The short- and long-term effects of poor food conditions on incarcerated individuals’ health also constitutes a form of ‘premature death’—oftentimes damaging a person’s physical and mental health and well-being for the rest of their life.” In this episode of Rattling the Bars, Mansa Musa, who spent nearly 50 years eating prison food himself, speaks with Kanav Kathuria, co-founder of The Maryland Food & Prison Abolition Project, about the institutionalized cruelty of the system that keeps incarcerated people malnourished and fed barely enough to stay alive.

  1. Seriously. You're in prison, you're lucky that feeding you at all. Because if you're in prison, you did something pretty d*** bad. But instead of making you learn from your consequences, you get free education. Free internet air conditioning heat and meals all day long and no bills

  2. May this topic continue to gain more momentum and become a priority to bring more humane conditions in this damn country and world wide

  3. if they wanted good food they shouldn't have broken the law, thats how u dont get incarcerated in the first place. Most people are able to pull this off.

  4. I swear to the gods, in 2019 I was in Milwaukee county to Waukesha county jail in Wisconsin for 2 months n started going blind! I got home doctors had me in ICU for a week for high blood sugar and cholesterol! Went in healthy, left a full blown diabetic on 4 meds to this day. I almost fkn died eating that trash, even commissary foods are crap u wouldn't let your kids eat daily. I've been telling ppl the EXACT thing HELLA CARBS! We should be able to sue for this shit! I'm still trying to get my health back together, smh so fkn wrong

  5. I was in Airway Heights prison in Washington state back in 2010-2012. Since I was so short. I just got a job in the kitchen for 28 bucks a month. We got a shipment of frozen salmon. Stamped right on the boxes not fit for human consumption. Prisons throw away full dumpsters of food breakfast lunch dinner everyday.

  6. Talk to a guy several weeks ago.
who got out of prison who said he had it better in prison than outside of prison better food better medical.

  7. Perhaps prison dietary regulators should make more frequent & UNANNOUNCED visits. Restaurants do this & then assign visible, posted letter grades after completing their inspections.
