Prisoners allege abuse at ‘shock’ camps – Everything Law and Order Blog

On March 10, the Moriah Shock Incarceration Correctional Facility in upstate New York closed its doors. Opponents to the closure said that the Moriah Shock facility provided essential jobs for the community and that the military bootcamp style of the program at so-called “shock” camps helps inmates recover from issues with alcohol and drug abuse. But is this true? What are “shock” camps? What goes on there? And do they actually help incarcerated people? In this episode of Rattling the Bars, Mansa Musa speaks with Keri Blakinger about the closure of the Moriah facility and about her recent article on “shock” camps, “‘A Humiliating Experience’: Prisoners Allege Abuse at Discipline-focused ‘Shock’ Camps.”

Keri Blakinger is a staff writer for The Marshall Project whose work focuses on prisons and jails. She writes “Inside Out,” a regular column published in collaboration with NBC News. She previously covered criminal justice for the Houston Chronicle, and her work has appeared in the Washington Post Magazine, VICE, the New York Daily News, and The New York Times. She is the The Marshall Project’s first formerly incarcerated reporter. Her memoir, Corrections in Ink, comes out in June 2022.

  1. I disagree. I went to shock in the 90's and never been back to prison ever since. The motto for shock is break you down and build you up. I went to Lakeview and I was suffering from substance abuse selling drugs and the experience looking back was fun I needed focus. I think the folks now a days are just soft. I was young and doing bad stuff and this was a chance for me to take accountability. I don't care if no one agrees but this lady doesn't understand if you had the choice to go to Coxsakie/green or go to shock I manned up and went to shock and got the shit kicked out of me for 8 months. It worked, however I do agree with the being on meds or mental issues should not be able to go to shock. The only folks that got into trouble while in the program is because they were making trouble …Facts. Shock didnt help with addiction but it gave me challenges that I had to mentally /physically needed to get through evolutions of shock. People quit drugs when they are sick and tired shock provided something else for me. BTW there was never ever torture to anyone because you can quit shock anytime you want and go to regular prison.

  2. Why don't people put them in christian facility with people filled with the love ,mercy , compassion of Jesus Christ to work with these hurting people..

  3. This is in humane ,it's clear they don't have no knowledge on trauma , mental health which causes the root of people who suffers from addiction. This is evil people that runs a place like that. God help these people 😥😥

  4. its a form of enslavement, of mind, body and freewill, through coersion, intimidation and force, its real purpose is too dehumanize and manipulate, its all just state sanctioned torture, absolutely disgusting and evil!

  5. I'm glad to see Fox News Post criminal the stories like this, but I got a question. How come Fox News don't report crimes with white people. I never see that, It's so much crime going on with white people, but they only post black people in criminal acts. This is a white supremacist move.
Fox News start with the racist tactics.
This is exactly why Donald Trump lost the presidency… Racism!!!!

  6. "the only viable alternative prisons is a national cemetary"? here is a viable alternative, turning their towns into beautiful gardens people want to visit. without feeding off the dead and superstition to extort people and poison the earth with chemicals. these towns have nnot tried being pretty its like boring larping, they have a dollar general and nothing else.

  7. Let's be honest, most of the people there are African Americans and people of colour. So it's absolutely b.s that the American government cares about its black citizens to create programmes to rehabilitate them.

  8. How even in the mildest of ways, does anyone and a country that claims to be a beacon of human rights be abusing their citizens rights in this way. How does anyone even think that this is acceptable in any form or shape. This was an experiment used to continue the dehumanisation and abuse of black people by white people. White people have always been obsessed with the torture and abusing of others and in particular, Black people. This is racism 101 and how this woman can say that this program has any merits with a straight face?

  9. States can re-outfit prisons to become factories to re-employ the community of displaced workers from prison closings.

  10. If they don’t treat prisoners right why would they treat the deceased any better especially trying to profit off of death. The last thing you can do is at the least be buried free unless you want to be celebrated. Free healthcare & free the prisoners free the dumb from being so..

  11. and rainbows and unicorns.
    The establishment don't play nice.
Just like the complete obfuscation of the masses of people in shanghai locked in the towers screaming. NOTHING ON THE BBC
like the 100 upon hundreds of thousands of Pakistani people on the streets protesting the American coup de etat of the Pakistani government by America NOTHING to see. Because the establishment don't want you to see.
But you can see sport all over the world
You can see fake prices being artificially hiked to scare everyone into a submissive mood
The crippled American government with a stupid crook in the white House getting completely shielded by the media GOADING zelensky to fight to the last Ukrainian.
    Ja.
WE need a miracle of sorts to sort out the utter corruption of the wests leaders.

  12. Sounds like some nursing homes and NYS Out-Of-State rehabilitation centers New York hospitals send patients to; such as Holyoke Rehabilitation Center a/k/a CareOne Holyoke, in Western Massachusetts. Staff neglect, abuse (torture) and drug patients against their will (on drugs with horrible side effects), isolate from family and friends at HRC/CareOne Holyoke and the Local Police and the Massachusetts Department of Health COVER UP what goes on there as MANY die there or sent to a local hospital and die.

I heard CareOne in Beverly, Massachusetts is a horrible place also.

  13. That thumbnail looked like my BMT unit… 60 women doing push-ups in a much smaller/tighter hallway!

  14. The government is the most corporate in the country just look at the Biden family that's why the cops doing what they are doing because they are for the democratic

  15. American Gulag … However small and less horrific when compared to the vast Russian and Chinese torture and slave labour systems … Cut the flutey muzak in front of the bad news … Pathetic this mainstream media

  16. Gotta love the economy being justification for things. You know what was really good for the economy? Slavery. Abolishing it would wreak havoc on the economy. In an economy like capitalism, it can’t be more clear whats more important.

  17. It's just trauma based mind control. It's almost identical to how military indoctrination is done, and it's based on CIA/OSS research dating back at least as far back as the 50's.
The basic premise is that the person's mind it exhausted and mental defenses broken down, opening the person up to "suggestion", aka programming. If it's not done properly, you get a broken machine, and done properly, you get a "functional" machine that might do the things you want it to do, but it will still be unpredictable for a variety of reasons.

  18. WITHOUT SUBSTANCE ABUSE the Corporations that help to destroy South American Countries wouldn't be able get PRODUCTS that can be SOLD for up to 100x Times the VALUE in the USA.
…… The CIA for Years has been the SLAVE to CORPORATIONS and against U.S. Citizens.
