Cases of cholera have been confirmed at Haiti’s National Penitentiary in Port-au-Prince. Cholera, which spreads through unsanitary water, has become endemic in Haiti since the 2010 earthquake, and is believed to have been inadvertently introduced by UN peacekeepers. According to advocates, the Haitian prison system has been a ticking time bomb for cholera for years. Migrant justice organizations in the US have raised the alarm over conditions in Haitian prisons, where migrants deported by the US are often warehoused without formal charges or a trial.
S.B., a survivor of deportation who spent time in Port-au-Prince’s National Penitentiary, joins Rattling the Bars to share his experience of the Haitian prison system. S.B. reports a total lack of sanitary infrastructure within the prison, even attesting that prisoners who died in their crowded cells were often left there overnight in the presence of other inmates. Sociologist Jon Shaffer also joins the show to contextualize how Haiti’s current predicament is the result of centuries of colonial intervention and extraction from Haiti. Schaffer, S.B., and other advocates are calling for the immediate release of prisoners in Haiti, and an end to US deportations to the country. They also strongly oppose the US’s proposal to redeploy foreign soldiers to Haiti through the UN.
Jon Shaffer is a sociologist and organizer based in Baltimore who studies global health organizations, social movements, and their struggles over scientific knowledge. He is Peste Magazine’s Associate Editor for Labor, Organizing, and Activism.

Let it spread, wait. Patience and the overcrowding will cease.
Why don't you talk to the Clinton's about Haiti , they drained that country dry of it treasures, then put a puppet in to rule over the poor. Get your story straight.
Humans no matter who they are don’t belong to live like this!!
I blame the government 😒 why imprison people if ur economy Is failing Haiti u have nothing and you treating ur people like nothing u guys are sick 😫 Lazy ND can't sort out your affairs correctly people are dying blood is on your hands
Love that intro theme by the way!
I'm wondering if money's involved to keep people in prison here!
God please help the people of Haiti â¤ï¸ðŸ€ðŸ™
All the gangs were created, being protected and funded by the CIA… now they are pouring cholera powder in the water to bring Haiti to its knees…🔥🔥🔥 and still the cholera cases only involved in 2 deaths and it was prisoners in prison…
I have a solution to all of Haiti’s problems, including cholera, gangs, corruption, violence, food insecurity, etc. Here goes:
1) A 9.3 magnitude earthquake hits the entire island, lasting for a full 30 minutes (non-stop).
2) The earthquake triggers a series of tsunami tidal waves that are 120 feet (in height) that wash over the entire island each hour. This lasts for 8 hours.
3) A category 5 hurricane stalls over the island for 72 hours. The hurricane has sustained winds of 295 mph and wind gusts of 365 mph. In addition to the winds, the category 5 hurricane drops 243 inches of rain.
Problem solved because in all likelihood, at-least 10 million Haitians will perish.
For Haiti, cholera is God’s way of punishing their crime, violence, gangs, etc. Haitians…..STOP your bad ways and the cholera will clear up. God helps those who help themselves.
Why don't they have a sewage system? I understand Haiti has suffered natural disasters — did these take out existing sewage systems or does Haiti simply not have proper sewage/sanitation?
The description of this prison is that of an actual "hell hole."
Isn't it odd how people treat one another in the most despicable, hideous way . Can't you imagine the smell of the place ?
REPAIRATIONS
Where's Wycleff at? He's got to be the most well known Haitian alive, is he not?
We need to keep poor people in prison to keep their inferior genes out of the gene pool. That is true progress.
Disease planted by Neoliberal operatives.
Wow…
I bet the caller really wished he was in a U.S. prison during his ordeal. Compared to lockup in third world hellholes like Haiti.
Even the worst penitentiaries in the states seem like four or five star hotels.
Th8s is a Really GREAT CHANNEL!! Listen to these stories..8ve got a real horrible story that 8m holding inside for many years..maybe I should go on this channel!
Th8s is simply Horrifying!! Ii do believe there are many political prisoners in there along with men who are criminals. You can t treat people like that. The whole place will be full of half dead men on the ground. Cholera comes from filth..
The RCMP (royal Canadian mounted police) have been training the Haitian national police on just the types of techniques they were brought into existence to use on Indigenous peoples in Canada.
Oh don't let Canada off the hook for its imperialist interests in Haiti. Aristide was overthrown primarily by Canadian snipers after a meeting held in Ottawa with the then prime minister Paul Martin regarding Aristide' horrible offense of barely raising the national minimum wage(!) Guildan active wear, a sweat shop utilizing corporation based out of Montreal couldn't have their profits being cut into so the Canadian state teamed up either US and deposed the dude.
The US isn’t going to help. Those days are gone. Haiti seems so tribal which is hard to help.
Thank you for covering this ~ what the MSM would never do.
Haitian people are haiti's problem period
No sympathy for any screws who contract cholera and don't survive.
The world continues to ignore the fact that Haiti's calling on Russia to come help them.
I'm wondering how many countries sent their criminals to America and other borders ?
Peop!e are being allowed to walk in with no identification …. Inclusivity and all that .
Except for U.S. government/corporate imposition of subsistence manufacturing plants in Haiti and U.S.-suppression of the Haitian minimum wage, U.S. treatment of rampantly capitalist Haiti scarcely differs from U.S. treatment of socialist Cuba.
Excellent report thanks for your Humanity!!!!!
They have been vengeful against Haiti for gaining their liberation from France and the western world!!!!
This puts a light on the phrase "the rule of law". It requires institutional/civic mindsets that will not accept anything less than no corruption, full due process, segregated oversight (cannot be cops/prison administration for example), and some type of NGO/International input. This goes for American domestic prisons as well. The US may feed their prisoners better, but there is a system of oppression keeping those prisons full with questionable sentences designed to keep the profiteers in the black (on top of a racist bias against darker skinned peoples). Make that worse by using the prisoners to make a further profit by working for slave wages to profit friends of the governors/corporations that run this.
Cholera? Another method of extermination of the undesirable.

Haiti and Puerto Rico are basically slave labour colonies of the United States of America.
It's C. Swab (sp) and company ie. US GOVERNMENT, EU, UN WEF etc that is creating this problem and they are happy that it's happening but will throw just little help tht way so it doesn't look like it them causing it. The Government itself in Haiti is a shadow/puppet government being ran by the ones mentioned above.
When Bush & Clinton jumped in to stop all those donations after the earthquake from being wasted on the people I knew things were really bad there. I really hope that they enjoyed all the money they stolen from those poor people because that bill is about to come due.
I've always considered myself a student of history. This is literally the first time I've heard about Haiti having to pay reparations.
Society is crumbling. Compassion overload is in effect.
Red Cross, et al are not humanitarian, they are human traffickers.
What a shame ! we have lost our humanity indeed
ask the Clintons for the $$$, thats whom stole it. and build higher walls.
Free them so they can spread it
