The economic fortunes of rural communities across the United States are often deeply intertwined with the prison industrial complex. This poses a real challenge to the project of ending mass incarceration. How can organizers build political opposition to prisons in areas where prisons are the lifeblood of a community? And what should be done with former prisons once they are closed? The question of repurposing prisons in particular is too often neglected by state governments. A new report from the Sentencing Project finds that while 21 states have closed prisons since 2000, many of these sites have simply become other types of correctional facilities in the absence of clear transition plans. Nicole Porter from the Sentencing Project joins Rattling the Bars to discuss this new report.

The purpose of criminal correction is to keep society safe, and to psychologically rehabilitate people. It's Not supposed to be about punishment, which is what most people think prison is supposed to be for.
Only violent criminals should be arrested and detained. Non violent crimes, including drug use, should only get heavy fines. But some people are criminally insane and incredibly violent and dangerous to society and they need to be detained and not allowed to viciously attack innocent people.
Once someone is found guilty of a violent crime they should automatically be labeled as psychologically disturbed and criminally insane. They should then be psychologically rehabilitated. They should only be freed when they are found to be rehabilitated and no longer a threat to innocent civilians. If they can't be psychologically rehabilitated, which some people can't, then they should be detained for the rest of their lives under Humane conditions in a psychological treatment center. They should not be freed and allowed to viciously attack innocent people, which is what happens all the time. Freeing an individual who is obviously not psychologically rehabilitated and is still incredibly violent and dangerous, and who is likely to viciously assault someone, this is insanity. A responsible government can not willingly allow a dangerous and violent psychologically disturbed person to roam the streets free to attack again.
People need psychological rehabilitation. It needs to be seen if it's possible to rehabilitate them where they don't want to hurt anyone anymore, not because of fear of punishment but because of a psychological breakthrough and radical change of heart. This transformation can not happen without a total revolution in how the government responsibly and humanely deals with individuals who very often have had traumatic childhoods and are deeply psychologically disturbed.
People who commit violent and vicious crimes should not be freed until they have been fully rehabilitated and are no longer a threat to innocent people. Then and only then. People should be freed based on their state of mind, not on an amount of time.
There needs to be a complete revolution in the criminal justice system. It needs to be understood that the focus of criminal correction is for just that, Correction, Rehabilitation. Not on draconian punishment and torture.
I’ve always thought we should end the stupid “War on Drugs†and then throw open the doors to all the unnecessary prisons and turn them into homeless shelters and/or rehab facilities. We could keep the recently unemployed cops and prison staff to cook, clean and keep the peace.
It's the culture. Hopefully they close so as to discontinue the rural population attitude.
I was hoping to hear examples of re-purposing different rural communities have created. What are local govts doing with these facilities ? How are they changing? What about employment of those dependent on the prison for income when prisons close? State and local governments do have a responsibility here and the USE of funds is the government's main focus. I'd like to learn more about HOW prison re-purposing has been successfully implemented
