Rattling the Bars: Unions must stand up for prisoners – Everything Law and Order Blog

Prisoners today are fighting the same labor conditions behind bars that birthed the union movement in the 19th Century. US labor journalist and Real News contributor Michael Sainato joins Rattling the Bars to discuss why the union movement today should see the prison struggle as an essential part of the fight for justice for all workers.

  1. Excuse me!!! Prison is not a country club. People are there because they have broken the law enough to have been imprisoned. They would rather work than be sitting in their cells. Letting them work and get a little payment is doing them a favor enough!!!

  2. The Christmas shopping season is right around the corner. Start a public awareness campaign now and dox every single company that is profiting off of this slave labor model. Their bottom line is the only thing they understand.

  3. if we unionized prison labor, they would be paying prison workers what they are worth and we can't have that. prison labor is just the newest form of slavery. unfortunately, a large population of black people are forced to work for little to no money. FOR YEARS!!!! and the only way its going to change is if a large percentage of the population gets involved. and unless you or someone you know, is in, or has been in prison, nobody cares unless it affects them directly. a large part of the prison population, live in poverty and don't have the money to fight these corporations that have unlimited resources to ensure their cash cow doesn't disappear.

  4. its a sad, sad state when we have to have a blood bathe for shit to change. why do people have to die for things to get better?

  5. This Political History is VERY detailed! It's HARD to EXPLAIN how the FEDERAL Government DISMANTLED everything peice by peice starting from when OUR country almost had a Revolution in 1970s.

  6. Privatization of Prisons is a Crime in & of Itself! Biden Supported Clinton's 3 Strikes Bill & Dramatically INCREASED Incarcerated Population aka Slave Labor!

  7. Now I know why Bill Clinton got away with giving China so much advanced Western technology. It’s a big club, and they’re untouchable unless they rock the boat .

  8. The Haymarket massacre in Chicago happened on May 1st. Which the world calls Labor Day. Grover Cleveland gave us a Labor Day at the end of summer so we wouldn't celebrate with the world.
I wish I remembered more detail,
looks like it's back to the books.

    Peace love and solidarity!

  9. This analysis of unions provided by Michael is oversimplified and biased. Unions largely prop up capitalism and the extractive colonial policies that fuel industrialization. Most unions are filled with racists and support white supremacist nationalism, along with the politicians that enshrine working class oppression into law. The IWOC is mostly the exception where it is worker driven and coordinates with people outside of prisons working toward prison abolition. Most unions support law enforcement and the carceral state.

  10. UPS and Purolator drive their Workers like animals and compensate them very poorly, Teamsters Union is a bad joke.

  11. I had some idea but not this much. Good work, keep this report going, on how it ties into work/loss of work on the outside. Sadly, usually ppl don’t care if they think it doesn’t affect them.

  12. The way to bust union? Flood the border and employ illegal immigrants with used to making 10 dollars a day and call it humanitarian by kicking out domestic workers that can enforce their rights as citizens

  13. If you can run for president from a prison cell, you should be able to join a union! Prisoners should form a union, it would be the largest in the world!

  14. The divided states is morally and spiritually bancrupt due to INDUVIDUALISM and CAPITALISM. A failed state parrading and pretending to be the best in the world. The operatives (judges, DAs, prosecuters and police departments and other enforcement agencies and federal and states politicians) and administratives of the inhumane racist justice system perpetuates VIOLENT  culture of
POLICE BRUTALITY, MISCONDUCT, POLICE MURDEROUS ART, MASS INCARCERATION,  DISCRIMINATION, MASS BRUTALITY,  HARRASEMENT, INTIMIDATION,  DOMESTIC T, OPRESSION, SAPARATION OF NUCLEAR FAMILIES AND LAWLESSNESS.
The jackboot justice have been heavily CAPITALIZED to harm, target and criminalize citizens and disporpotionaly black americans through violent laws and policies created by federal and state politicians. The investigatory PIE Chart that  detail the counts of jails, prisons, correction facilities  and millions of incarcerated citizens DOES NOT tell the WHOLE story of what the federal and state politicians are doing to their fellow citizens across the country.
A quarter of the population (80 million citizens) have directly affected by the impact of the mass criminalization and incarceration through SEPARATION OF NUCLEAR FAMILIES.
The divided states government (executive, legislative and judicial brach, law enforcement agency (police departments), news media) are thuggish and terrorist instituion that silently harm citizens of the world 🌎 to forster corporate capitalism in order to allow the corrupt stake holders to remain in POWER.
This is purely a violent engineered system designed to CONTROL citizens through oppression and suppression and allow for politicians to retain POWER while serving the interest of the corporations rather than their citizens.
The divided federal politicians lack the capacity to serve the interest of their fellow citizens.
