I’m in Australia and if I need healthcare I get it, what ever it is, without charge. I pay a Medicare levy each year with tax.
When I think of the health system in the US it makes my skin crawl.
It’s amazing the sense of peace people have when they know that if they need it, healthcare is available and no one will ask you if you have enough cash or insurance for the treatment. Put Medicare in place and I’m sure you’ll see a rapid decline in the litigation culture of the US.

Medicare is not "free" health care. Free health care in retirement requires spending $450-550/person/month in the form of premiums for Medicare Parts B & D, and for a private Medigap policy.
What Americans want is Medicaid for all. At present, Medicaid is available to all members of all households whose annual income is below the Federal poverty line ( roughly, = $8000/household + $4500/household member). Congress allows states to raise the eligibility threshold to 13% of the poverty line. A further adjustment of that threshold and of the ACA subsidies could eliminate the vast majority of tough luck cases.

No, if your plan doesn’t cover stop loss insurance…you can run out of coverage with a catastrophic illness even with an employer based plan. Most people don’t know to read their entire plan product coverage contract.
Entirely private hospitals have ways of blackmailing the government over funding. What they do is run deficit budgets and underfund things like the emergency ward or out-patient treatments etc. as a means to pressure the government to pay more. They basically play shell games with costs and meter treatment. Whatever the system, there needs to be constant auditing and chaperoning, constant. The transition from the money grubbing thievery system to modest and efficient is going to take years and one must look at all the scams that are occurring in other countries
