Rural Wisconsinites take on the factory farming industry – Everything Law and Order Blog

There is a battle happening in rural America: Across the country, rural farming communities are struggling to combat the relentless onslaught of Big Ag and the factory farming industry. With help from the federal and state governments, industrial farming and concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) have colonized greater swathes of rural areas, upending what remains of the independent farming economy and polluting the air, land, and waterways.

Throughout the month of July, as part of their investigative series “The Wisconsin Idea,” TRNN is teaming up with In These Times magazine to bring you in-depth coverage from three rural counties in Western Wisconsin (Burnett, Polk, and Crawford) where farmers and other community members have been engaged in a tireless battle to halt construction of two factory hog CAFOs that they fear will do irreparable damage to their communities.

  1. The answer to "Big Pork Industry" is turkey. It's that enough farmers have to flood the market collectively and market it as better than pork. Even the Amish have turkey farms. It's the one meat that tastes just as good in sausage or bacon form.

  2. Some of the comments here say to boycott CAFOs or go vegan. Alvarez just said on an episode of Breaking Points that the pork isn't produced for U.S. markets but it sold to China. So unless you live in China, boycotting the company or changing your diet isn't going to do anything. They need real political action and people in power to step up. I feel for you Wisconsin, good luck.

  3. this is a nation wide issue, it is about agriculture and trade policy. the mississippi river and the great lakes are vital fresh water sources, water is life, indifference is complicity. no tar sand pipelines no cafos.

  4. I don't think you have to raise your voices to end mega-farming…they are only producing what you like to eat in addition to making money for producing it.
The end of mega-farming begins by changing your lifestyle. End the consumerism associated with mega-farming and it will go away… you'll have to raise your voices at government to get them to change…I think that is a lot harder than changing your lifestyle and consumption patterns. Government cannot put-up a fight or save a dying industry if people decide to stop barbecuing and spending money in big beef restaurants and fast food chains, its all killing you anyway with disease.

  5. Going vegan is proven to be the healthiest diet for humans, and definitely healthier and more humane to animals, and essential for the health of our beautiful planet Earth.

  6. Damn,The Real News Network never ceases to impress me with honest journalism that's become so rare these days. This is about the only channel I can recommend anymore, thanks Real News!

  7. Farms sitting on top of ground water recharge zones is nothing new. There are cases in every state going back decades and each one begins and ends with government corruption.

  8. Thank you so much for posting! When there was flooding in the east, the area was overwhelmed with floating hog carcasses & hog waste. Disgusting & dangerous.
