Since Vladimir Putin ordered Russian troops to invade Ukraine, thousands of people in Russia have risked their safety and freedom to engage in illegal public demonstrations to protest the war, many of whom have been arrested by Russian police for doing so. As Ilya Matveev and Ilya Budraitskis recently wrote for Jacobin, “While some signs of ‘rallying around the flag’ are inevitable, it is remarkable that despite complete control over major media sources and a dramatic outpouring of propagandistic demagoguery on TV, the Kremlin is unable to foment enthusiasm for war.” TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez speaks with Ilya Matveev from St. Petersburg about the state of anti-war sentiments and demonstrations within Russia, and about the need for the international left to oppose the war and show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

Ilya Matveev is a researcher and lecturer based in St. Petersburg, Russia. He is the co-host of the podcast Политический дневник (Political Diary) with Ilya Budraitskis and is a member of the research group Public Sociology Laboratory.

  1. I’ve been learning Russian for some time now, so I pay SUPER attention to things and I wouldn’t believe the polls. Even the one mentioned at the beginning of this video, from the LC, consistently spews out repeating percentages which is a sign of doctored numbers. For example, I’ve seen the percentages 60% & 55% used SO many times with them (100-40=60, 100-45=55). Western media, Russia watchers, pundits love quoting these polls… as proof that practically almost all of Russian society is evil and backwards from my observation, so I’d take them with a grain of salt.

There can’t be any real way of knowing what most ordinary Russians think under the dictatorship; if I’m to base myself off social media, most Russians (young & older) seem to be anti-war. But again… mainstream media & well paid western pundits in particular seems to want to push the narrative that practically almost all of Russians are pro the war and no different than the regime. Just this morning I read one of these pundits claiming he couldn’t find any anti-war dissent on Russian social media when I’ve literally had no problem finding it. He had like 6k likes within a couple of hours and a sea of anti-Russian xenophobic comments below. I wouldn’t even be surprised if the “independent” pollster is their by product.

I’m under the impression a lot, if not most, ordinary Russians are also stuck in the middle of two info warriors (regime vs western pundits who need a hostile Russia to have careers)

  2. There's massive international aid to Russia's activists, it's just coming from the worst possible people and organizations. Doing more harm than good.

  3. It might be a small thing, but what people at home can do right now to help the people in Ukraine is to report all the false information from Russian propaganda to YT !!! Slava Ukraini 💙💛

  4. Have people watching YouTube thought this through?

If the Ukraine wins this conflict with Russia, you will have a fully revitalized Cold War costing trillions with an anti-Russian state at Russia's border, possibly armed with nuclear weapons. This conflict may already be spreading into Belarus. Russia, a nuclear armed power, feeling hostile and more threatened than before. There are factions at the Pentagon that view the Ukraine as the key to dismantling the Russian state. I don't approve of Putin's actions but his fears are justified and he probably felt it called for decisive action… What is more dangerous is the war fever promoted by Western media… It would have been so easy to deal with this situation diplomatically but objectives were in conflict and concealed… IMHO, the US is using war as a cover for dire domestic problems at home..

  5. This biased @zz one sided cover against russia, they probably said little if anything about the United States, and Nato Illegal Invasions
into IRAQ, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya and others, where maybe all
together over 700,000 thousand people died, a lot were CIVILIAN'S!
This channel is disgusting". And nothing but 🦜 Parroting the west talking points.

  6. I am from Kyiv. we are in hiding. need financial help. no food, water, diapers, and more. who can write to me.
    Слава Україні 🇺🇦🇺🇦

  7. I find it odd that no one cares to see that NATO seems to want to encroach father and farther East. Biden putting sanctions on Russia isn’t going to hurt Putin. It will hurt the Russian people. Sanctions don’t hurt the elite.

  8. LMAO, this ant war dialogue brings memories of the Occupy movement and a vision of that young girl with her head wrenched back and that giant can of pepper spray forced up her nose by that giant cop, Oh I almost fgot we just saw how Canada reacts to peaceful protest and the eyes shot out during the French protests bugger me I better shut up I'm not laughing anymore.

  9. ➡️🤔The US and NATO HYPOCRITES AND CYNICS The US and ALLIES destroyed Irak and killed 1 millón innocent people for nothing you and your country are evil on earth and are going straight for HELL, from hell all you corrupt cinical politicians and your supporters will no escape God's punishment for all the invasions and the millions of innocent people that you killed, in Irak 1 million innocent, in Vietnam 3 million innocent, YOU CORRUPT MEDIA AND POLITICIANS WILL BE TAKEN STRAIGHT TO HELL, YOU WILL CRY AND SCREAM FOR FORGIVENESS, BUT IT WILL BE TOO LATE, THE UNITED STATES IS THE CHOSEN NATION ON EARTH BY LUCIFER AND ITS SERVANT'S FREEMASONS WILL BE BURNING IN HELL AFTER JESUS SECOND COMING

  10. OFFS LMAO We all know the BS that has been going on with Eastern Europe since the breakup of the Sov Union Right? We do don't we? so we have all been waiting for Russia to get pissed off enough for war Right? for years right? I don't know [f we have nukes on the Russian border but I have seen video of Putin telling us if we keep putting missiles on his border he would have to have a first strike policy, if I've seen Putin telling us this info then so have you. So now we poke th bear and we are on th verge of a Nuclear holocaust in Europe and ICBMs are the only way th USA can be hit so maybe the USA will get some this time perhaps the USA will get a lesson along with the rest of us. This could be goodbye to civilisation in the Northern hemisphere, And all because we keep voting for more of the same.

  11. Sorry, "I don't know" is not an excuse. You either organize other Russians to protest or you are condoning what your government is doing. All Russians are responsible for their government-ALL RUSSIANS. Russians need to stop being cowards and stand up to their government. Russian protesters are the heroes and the best way to end this WAR! Can Putin arrest every Russian? Protest!

  12. This channel has some decent stuff on domestic politics, but is a lapdog for Western Imperialism on the international stage.
For a far more nuanced and intellectual take on this topic go check out the Class Is Fundamental channel's video "Ukrainian Ordeal".

  13. No justification huh? So RealNews is just going to erase the thousands of people in the Donbas killed by Ukrainian nazis?
Pathetic attempt at journalism, ignoring history.
The US designed coup and subsequent rise of nazi extremists in Ukraine is what started the fire. No doubt putin just threw gasoline on that fire, but don't deny who actually started it.
War sucks and I truly feel for all the countless civillian victims on both sides, but stop trying to obscure why this is happening.

  14. I took a video of my encounter with police earlier today. Can I send it to you so you can share it? I'm pretty new to this YouTube stuff.
