The 20th Century saw a great global uprising against European imperialism as the former colonial countries shook off their shackles and rose up for independence. More than a half century later, global inequality is sharper than ever before. To understand the current predicament of the vast majority of the world’s people, we must understand the intervening decades. Matt Kennard and Claire Provost’s book, Silent Coup: How Corporations Overthrew Democracy, looks inside the international architecture of global corporate governance that exists to flout and crush any attempts by the former colonial world to enact development on their own terms. Matt Kennard joins The Chris Hedges Report for a look at this intriguing and essential history.

  1. Bet ya'll some of the greedy billionaires behind these corporations are the same causing much of the filth in US.

  2. Corporations troll and laugh at the governments and to our voting systems.
The financial guys got together with lawyers and corporations to profit where the sky is the limit.

  3. @karenprice2303 it also indicates to me that what you call the elite are very fearful of the consequences of their behaviour. Yes, they have the resources to employ private security, but that would only hold true if there was a mutually agreed value system in place. I can see them expending more and more energy on keeping safe and well. I certainly would not want to live having to watch my back all of the time and thinking "who can I trust"?

  4. @peterodonnell4404. I mostly agree with your comment, but choice is still available, for now. I know that multinationals re-brand the same products to give the impression of real choice, but, if corporations continue to have their way, maybe in the near future, there will not be choice as the corporation's merge in takeovers, hostile or not, to produce one line. In this scenario, I think that, ultimately, the snake will eat its own tail as, in reality, there is no such thing as the status quo. The only constant is change.

  5. So when trump blocked ttip, he must have known there was a long standing framework to achieve much the same already. I can only think he did it to come across as being "with the people", i.e a political move to portray integrity.

  6. The richest people in the world are the worst people in this 🌎
If this wasn't true, the world would be a better place to live in.

  7. They are confusing smoke with fire, it is not the corporations that govern the world, it is the plutocrats who are the biggest shareholders(of almost all Western multinationals) who in the 70s came together to form the Trilateral, and who have as clients, (a system inherited from the ancient Romans) the oligarchs of the various "democratic" countries, who in turn control the political elites of these countries (through financing the two parties that take turns in power in these countries.) The biggest problem with this system is that these plutocrats, cyclically, every 8 or 10 years, create artificial economic crises to subtract the added value generated by technological progress, and by the effort of the populations. The other, even worse, is that since the industrial revolution, they have subtracted the added value generated by the great technological advances created by the 2nd industrial revolution, by office automation, the internet, robotics and now AI. These great technological advances were achieved with the use of enormous investments from society, in state research centers, in state universities, in cutting-edge science organizations, which are subsidized by the state, by society, but then the profits from these investments will end up in the hands of plutocrats, half a dozen people who control through their positions as major shareholders, of Microsoft, of Pfizer, Google, Fords, Boeing, etc. And then through the media, which they control, like everything else, they create the idea among the population that there are not enough financial resources for retirement, social support, etc. It's I time to wake up and stop confusing smoke with fire, because this idea is created artificially, such as that the culprits of the crisis are the banks (banks are just buildings, their biggest shareholders are responsible – just as in the case of "corporations" – it is their largest shareholders who are responsible, not the corporations. This idea that was created through the media and literature serves to hide reality, serves to create a veil over these plutocrats – who seem to not exist. But they exist, in the 70s they formed an alliance and created an institution to defend and promote their interests – the Trilateral – they created an economic philosophy – Neo liberalism, and they created Thatcher and ReaganAnd every year they create the great social event called the Bilderberg Club meeting – where their clients – the oligarchs meet the political elites – but they are in the shadows of the corridors, they don't appear, they have an aversion to daylight.

    It`s time to wake up!

  8. The corporations are supposed to be regulated by laws and enforcement.
This used to work reasonably well when the justice systems had a conscience.
The politicians are bought off. The enforcers are bought off. The judges are bought off.
If all else fails it could come down to anarchy against the people running those corporations and those who were bought off.

  9. I have listened to this several times, and I think it feels scarier each time, because there seems no way to overcome this situation. I know each time there is a win against a corporation, they learn from that and tighten up their methods.
All of community centers have corporate funding which then heavily influences their decision making. One example I know of: A older woman in the community who was rather wealthy left money to the community center for use on a bus or transport for older folks and for people who have ability barriers. It was only to be used for that – the community center fought it. They wanted to use it otherwise because the local oil and chemical corporations wanted to provide a bus with their logos all over it. (I find that so disgusting for many reasons). The woman's friend who was also given power of attorney, tried fighting back but there was not enough money, as the corporation was backing the community center. The whole thing was repugnant. Now we have these deluxe buses running about covered with logos and announcing how much they care about community.
I stopped trusting OXFAM after their response to my questioning their giving people animals…A well fed world also supports peoples of the world to be able to support themselves but without using sentients for not only animal rights reasons but also environmental, and human health reasons. OXFAM's response to me was a shaming refuting of the facts that I provided and the examples of what organizations like a well fed world and Food Empowerment Project are doing. They were not even willing to acknowledge that maybe they should look at it. They had their way and their backers -some of which belonged to animal agricultural pursuits. It's too bad because there are some brilliant individuals working within OXFAM.

  10. Capitalism is not democratic, democracy is no capitalist. Unregulated, unrestricted, uncontrolled capitalism, leads to the of disease and psychopathology as we observe today, and it's a main source of evil in the world. Capitalism and Democracy are fundamentally diametrically contradictory.

  11. Tempting to follow this line of thought. But wrong. Stand back from population – what has the economic power? Come on, you can THINK…!

  12. "I spent 33 years and four months in active military service and during that period I spent most of my time as a high class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City Bank boys to collect revenues in. I helped in the raping of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street. I helped purify Nicaragua for the International Banking House of Brown Brothers in 1902-1912. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for the American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Honduras right for the American fruit companies in 1903. In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went on its way unmolested. Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents."
