On Jan. 31 of this year, the Temple University Graduate Students’ Association (TUGSA) launched the first strike in their 25-year history. The decision to strike came as a result of years of organizing that largely began in 2020, after Temple’s decision to force in-person classes in the fall of 2020 led to a completely preventable COVID-19 outbreak. Striking for 42 days, graduate student-workers faced cuts to their health insurance, threats to lose tuition remissions, and more. Nevertheless, TUGSA persevered, winning a new contract that raised wages and eliminated Temple’s wage-tier system for graduate student-workers in different departments. Although the new contract doesn’t meet TUGSA’s maximal demands, the mettle and commitment displayed by student-worker organizers offers a bright spot with important lessons for the labor wave roiling academic institutions across the country. Vince Quiles, lead organizer of Home Depot United Philadelphia, interviews TUGSA strike captain Josh Stern to learn more about the story of the Temple University strike.

  1. Higher Ed in USA today MIRRORS the Waste, FRAUD & Abuse taking place across GOVERNMENT and the SuperBLOATED Administrative State. It is dragging down ALL levels of education and Screwing students.
Fix it? START by eliminating the SCAMmers & GRIFTers in the "Diversity, Equity & Inclusion" movement that has exploded budgets from elementary schools to universities across the country. And there's SO much more!

  2. Very good interview, including some discussion. I wish well for all students who come to be stuck in situations like these Temple U. students did ; also, maybe, other struggles that they can have. I was never aware of such situations at the U. I went to from 1985 to 1988 at Bishop's U. in Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada. I was employed as a tutor there for a few months, short due to the job being for fall and winter semesters, but with me giving up the job, because of not receiving feedback about how the students I tutored had improved in their math courses (business) and I didn't want to take $$$ from them if my tutoring them didn't really help them. Had the same experience in college, and the students I tutored gave me high evaluations (in both cases/schools), except that I didn't know anything about these things, until I quit both jobs. I don't want to undertake such roles, unless I get feedback, esp. that is positive. After all, if I am not helping these people, then I should seek other work to do ; that is, try to seek, for we don't know if we'll then be successful, or not. That didn't matter, for what did was whether or not I was of any real aid to these students. They gave feedback to the office where tutors were administered, say, but not directly to me, and the admin. office did or had not informed me.

  3. Expect big raises in your home depot bills now. Congratulations, just like you destroyed the American car industry. The people who did deserve raises the American railroad workers and time off.

  4. When a grown man says he’s really super super super excited to talk to some one. Ism like literally literally super out of here

  5. Dude! Did you really get bamboozled into believing all that Pfizer pfraud over jabs and masks and government collusion? That was to enrich the fat cats.

  6. When i worked there – i asked for a 25 cent raise and was rejected. For the next year – i printed all my English books at work 😂😂😂

  8. Unions should NOT exist. But if we HAVE to have them can we please have someone other than the Mob own them (thats right, EVERY Union is owned by the Teamsters Union. Didnt know that did you?)
