After the independent and worker-led Amazon Labor Union made history by unionizing the JFK8 fulfillment center on Staten Island—the first Amazon facility in the US to successfully vote to unionize—workers at a second facility in the same Staten Island complex, the LDJ5 sorting center, are voting in their own union election this week. On Sunday, April 24, the ALU held a rally in support of LDJ5 workers, featuring speeches from Amazon worker-organizers, labor leaders from other unions, and high-profile supporters like Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Kshama Sawant.

In this on-the-ground report, TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez and professional videographer Thomas Hedges speak with rally attendees about the significance of the LDJ5 union election and the broader grassroots movement to unionize the second-largest private employer in the US.

  2. Amazon did it to themselves. Had they treated their workers right from the beginning, the workers wouldn't have risen up. Good for the workers. They deserve a safe place to work. From what I've read in different blogs and what I've seen in videos , highly troubled troubled me. I refused to order anything from them because of it. I'm not pro union, but I'm not anti union. I was in two separate unions in the past. The first gave a decent pay package, but no benefits nor protection. The second didn't do anything, but run the company out. It got replaced by a non union company that paid better.

  3. what Smalls has done for workers is more than every president since Nixon (passed OSHA) a HUGE accomplishment. a true hero for workers.

  4. a small display of courage starts a fire. these new pioneers need the support of those who have retired from union jobs. now more than ever, stay active.

  5. Don't need AOC and Bernie, they were never there when their voices were needed, I surprised AOC wasn't wearing a ball gown that had union painted on the back.

  6. is just getting started… As ever, while the 1% get even richer.
Hence, f this bullshit populism. As long as we shop on amazon and all such trash, the labor union equals jackshit

  7. So if Amazon some how gets new citizens from the boarder to work for a cheaper rate then all the union workers could be out of a job. Aoc plus three sure was happy to help them out. She also is responsible for the millions of new citizens. When will people learn everything she touches turns to sheet. LGB

  8. Being a retired Teamster believe me you will get better salaries, good health care, vacations, sick pay ,Seniority and the big one a great retirement

  10. Great job my fellow American brothers & Sisters, it’s time that “ We The People “ stand our ground and let corporate America know that we are not there slaves ✊✊✊✊✌️✌️✌️and if Jeff doesn’t like it he can use all the money he has made off of short changing his employees and go live on the moon. Again I’m so proud of these people standing up for what they deserve ✊✊✊✊✌️✌️✌️

  11. Meanwhile Amazon has the technology acquired that will enable them to automate everything from receiving to delivery at your door. And plans to deploy all of it in the next 6-8 years. NO union in history has ever successfully saved their members jobs from changes in technology which rendered their positions obsolete. Not one. Even the Teamsters (Who were started by wagon drivers) lost almost 40% of their initial membership when the trucks came into being. That is why they organized in the first place was because of the trucks. It took over a decade for them to regain that loss in membership. Get it through you thick skulls. Labor is now adverse to productivity and efficiency in our digitally enabled reality. Not only manual labor, but mental labor as well. A smart phone app that someone codes in their spare time has the capacity to disrupt entire industries today. Over 3 million dollars worth of goods and services we had to pay for 20 years ago have been reduced to free apps today. And we are on the cusp of digitizing everything from food and medicine, to construction and logistics. All six major pillars of the economy will be disrupted by technology over the next 10 years. Its going to be more disruptive to our society than the arrival of the steam era was to the Feudal social economic model. That transition took 50 years. Not 10.

  12. maybe if Amazon wasn't so abusive of their employees this would not be happening think on that one Jeff Bezos
