I totally agree with West and Hedges here. BUT, West's current (2024) presidential run is a diffrent matter: Sure, I too voted for Nader several times and canvased for both Obama and Sanders. I too have always been in opposition to neoliberalism and unrestricted globalization. However, West’s continued idealism would be be all well and good for both America and humanity worldwide if only America was not confronting a second term for Trump in 2024, at the head of his transformed white-supremacist GOP.
West’s words of a duopoly and an equivalency between the parties ignores the attack on voting rights, campaign finance, abortion, social safety nets, and human rights in general by the 5-4 and now 6-3 Republican-nominated SCOTUS. West’s words of a duopoly and an equivalency between the parties ignores the many Democratic accomplishment by both Obama and now Biden. To fault Obamacare for the Blue Dog Democrats in 2009 is like faulting Obama himself for the white racist backlash of the 2010 midterms. West 1945-1973 descriptions is West reliving our many past grievances. To characterize progressive successes of the current Biden administration as "milk-toast" is plainly specious. West blaming some NATO expansion narrative and American provocation for Putin's wholly unprovoked invasion of Ukraine also feels false. West’s words of a duopoly and an equivalency between the parties also completely ignores Trump’s and his current GOP’s profession of pure hatred, climate change denial, Trump’s disdain for our Constitution, and his embrace of both authoritarianism and insurrection.
West words on not being naive and taking white votes from Trump are a clear pipe dream at best! Any logical-thinking progressive knows better than contemplating that possibility and understands that West will promote a Trump win in 2024. Hedges and West, of all people, should know better than to insist on a current people's, green, independent, or no-name, 15-minutes presidential candidacy. 2024 is not the "historical moment" for such histrionics, no matter how jazz-loving, courageous, or well-meaning it professes to be.
