We’re joined by Marilyn Vann, president of both the Descendants of Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes Association and African Indians of the 5 Civilized Tribes Foundation; Johnnie Jae, journalist and co-host of Decolonized News Hour; and Antonio Cosme, Indigenous activist, economist, and beekeeper from Detroit.

We look back on the history of Indigenous slave ownership, examine how that history influences anti-Black attitudes today, and discuss the push by Black Native Americans for Rep. Deb Haaland to urge tribes to honor the Treaties of 1866 requiring freedmen to be admitted to tribal nations as full citizens.

Burn It Down with Kim Brown returns live on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 5:00 p.m. EST!

  1. When she sort of said, 'it was benevolent… sometimes those words speak louder than volumes. [into the 40:00 or so min mark forgot to hit the mins button] Despite not being slaves, many people were psychologically conditioned to believe this. It’s complex. Only speaking on her mentioning that their story was “that weren’t actually slaves”. These are profound thoughts on the entire complexity of this.

Your work and sharing of this insightful research are greatly appreciated. Much needed.

  2. #CHICAGO brotha here
Lived in Minnesota for like 5 years.
Only time in my 30 years I've ever heard the sharp "er" publicly in my face was by the
    ✌🏿natives✌🏿 out there.
They also have their own slur for us: "muck"

  3. To be a REAL INDIAN, not a fake ass Native American, you MUST BE copper colored. If you are mixed with European or Asian, fine BUT SIT DOWN and RESPECT THE FULLBLOODS! The BIA will never help us because they are the ones that helped to steal our land and identity!

  4. I always hear about the 5 tribes but I want people to know of mines. I grew up in Charleston SC. I am Gullah/Geechee. We use to be called the Guale. We are American Indian Tribe. They say we died out but we didn't. Our nation spans across the southeastern states. I hear y'all talking about the black Seminoles but my understanding is that they were just Guale men that escape from Charleston to Florida. We have a rich history that I want to tell the world about

  5. Babe we didn't inherent sh!t !!!!!
They took it. Reclassified us as Black, Colored, Negro and Mulatto. Then classified themselves as Native American.
That sh!t has nothing to do with a American Indian, not Native American.
Not a Afrucan Native. That is a reclassified misnomer.
Freedmen ar full bloods by birthright !!!!!!
Not Italian, Russian Siberians nor Asian Mongolians nor Africans.
Check Arnoldus Montaunus maps of the 1671 and Jihn Oglby maps of 1671 also Giovanni De Verrazano maps f 1524 and see what these true American Indians really look like !!!!!!

  6. You being black has nothing to do with it. It's the fact that you're trying to bring African heritage into native culture which is creating a new heritage within one. Get your facts straight.

  7. There's no struggle. These blacks were racist to natives before they claimed native. Now they want benefits not because they respect native people but because of power. Once natives let these Africans get the advantage in our nation, they will ruin it just like these white people are trying to do. You blacks were freedmen, not actual descendants. We don't discriminate. We just see through your bs.
