Homecare is an essential service, yet many workers lacked PPE during the pandemic, emblematic of the industry’s poor treatment. Co-ops are showing it doesn’t have to be this way.

  1. Being a Home Care Worker and a member of SEIU503 here in Oregon has drastically changed my life.
I have health insurance, dental insurance, the ability to be part of a group of people racing for the same goals.

  2. Interesting post…but I wonder who is going to look after this care-giver subject as she Ages….? Is there going to be Home Care dollars available for Senior Black woman 10 – 30 yrs from now…?

  3. To be brutally honest.
When the Fight for Fifteen movement began a decade ago.
They made a serious error right out the door.
Instead of focusing on fast food and retail workers, which was very divisive and garnered negative reactions from the general public.
They should have exclusively focused on home health care workers, private security guards, paramedics, EMTS, etc.
They should have put those workers as the face of the movement.
    Had that happened.
I truly believe the general public would have been much more receptive to a $15/hr minimum wage hike nationwide.
    After all….
There are good arguments against paying unskilled food service and retail workers $15/hr.
However, You'd be hard pressed to find anyone arguing against paying paramedics and health care workers more money.
    It's all about the optics.
When all was said and done.
I believe we would have seen $15/hr minimum wage hikes that much sooner.
