The Never-Ending Brexit – Everything Law and Order Blog

The Brexit agreement between the UK and the EU is a temporary arrangement that maintains much of the status quo and does not really provide a clear path forward. As it stands, it could lead to Prime Minister Theresa May’s fall, says Prof. Leo Panitch

  1. If young voters responded affirmatively as to whether or not they wish to be in a Socialist Britain, then why in God's name did they overwhelmingly vote to remain? It doesn't make sense!

  2. A second referendum is a double edged sword that could also benefit the socialists within Labor who did not take a remain position but took a Progressive-Brexit position against EU neoliberal hegemony..

  3. "BREXIT MEANS BREXIT". BUT IT DOES NOT MEAN ANYTHING NEAR WHAT THE UK ELECTORATE VOTED FOR. THATS WHAT DEMOCRACY MEANS?

  4. EUniversal Credit is set to continue after any 'brexit' till 2023, whether we leave or not. New projects will begin up to that date as well …

  5. There can't be a second vote… the article 50 text is pretty clear that once the notice of the intention to leave has been submitted, the options are that a) there is a unanimous agreement of all relevant states (EU + the leaving state) of the dates when treaties will cease to apply, or b) if unanimous agreement is not reached, the treaties will cease to apply two years after the notice to leave was submitted. The text is easy to find online, it is fairly short and easy to understand… there is nothing there that says anything about withdrawing the notice to leave. And this makes sense, because states would be able to use the process to gain leverage, maybe cause problems, and then just cancel it, that's too much uncertainty and disruption… filing a notice of intention to leave would put the whole block in a state of uncertainty for the two years as nobody would even be able to tell whether the exiting state is really going to exit or not, and who will remain available to trade with etc. From what I can see, the only way to cancel the exit is to get unanimous agreement of all EU member states to modify the terms of Article 50 to allow a cancellation. If member states agreed to do this, they could unanimously agree an exit date far enough in the future to give time to make the necessary modifications to article 50, so there is no "ticking clock" to get the modifications done once an agreement is made… BUT there is the ticking clock to get the agreement, because it only takes one state to completely block it. For example, if the country did change it's mind and want to abort the exit and ask member states for this agreement, you could get Spain saying "give us Gibraltar", and we would have to choose between Gibralter and the EU. This could get pretty nasty, because suddenly there would be a whole new negotiation for a "remain deal" with terms potentially even more toxic than an exit deal with legitimate calls for a third referendum because "people weren't informed about what aborting the exit would mean".

  6. My laboring-class, we the slow of thought 50% working poor, surely we are not so fool as to wasted time voting for our next set of dictators. And so, when has this show ever enlightened the public that the more intelligent upper-half of society has always hoarded all the land, wealth, political power, healthcare and 95% of guns?

  7. The Labour Party is not remotely coherent. They have yet again made themselves unelectable by permitting entryism thus leaving the centre left homeless.

  8. So basically Teresa May’s deal is indirectly staying inside the EU. That does not sound like something the British ppl voted for, does it? Worse, the UK would be in the mercy of EU for trade. They can’t trade with US unless EU gives approval because There is NO transitional date to be finalized, this way the UK would be stuck in custom union forever. Really weak deal. However, could any leader from other party do any better? I doubt it. May has done the best she could to come up with the best weak deal within the constraints she got by the highly bureaucratic EU institution. UK is no US or China. No one would be able to snap any good deal unless all EU member states agree to reform their exit EU agreement to deal with member states withdrawing from membership in the future. The UK may be right for leaving, but they had not thought through the post-brexit would be like in terms of economic and social impacts. It’s not going to be as easy as like packing your bags and leave the building. They should’ve prepared for the worst before voting to leave.

  9. What did anyone really expect when the people who are supposed to make a BREXIT deal are against it? Of course they dragged it out for as long as they could & then put a poison pill in it, DUH!!!!

  10. Two glaring issues with this man's false portrayal of this situation:1)Brexit wasn't a xenophobic movement the oligarchs have been blaming their crushing of the people of britain on the EU so of course since that's the bat these scumbags have been hitting them with the people of britain voted to take it away from them. 2)Jeremy Corbin is not a socialist he's pro worker. There is a huge difference between sticking up for the little guy and making government work for the people, and wanting the government to take over everything and there being no private property or businesses. He's just trying to stop the businesses and banks from cannibalizing the country and world to death.

  11. Thanks to TRNN for interviewing real academics who are subject matter experts.
On a meta-YouTube topic: Why does the latest update to the Android YouTube app now list Block this Channel as the first (and easily accidentally pressed) choice listed when the menu icon (3 vertical dots) is touched for any TRNN videos on the "Recommended videos" page, yet this choice doesn't exist for some channels that I am not subscribed to, such as MSNBC?

  12. The EU is a an economic protectionist racket. Trump is also trying to impose protectionism and in both cases this hurts economically. Look at what the EU has done to Greece, Italy etc. ! Brussels doesn't care if they plunge these countries into poverty. The only choice the UK really has is no Brexit. They need to look outward to the rest of the world for economic growth and not the EU which is shrinking as a share of global GDP. The EU basically running on fumes cause their broke. They only ever saw the UK as a money pot The UK should keep its money cause they're really not getting their money's worth from the EU. Especially now that the EU will be ending all the rebates for agriculture and all the other rebates too !
