As US sanctions against Venezuela take an ever-greater toll on the country and its people, it is important to understand how the sanctions work and the extent of the damage they have caused, say Steve Ellner and Greg Wilpert, in a joint analysis of the situation

It's apparent that US sanctions which are unilateral and against the global order of rules are illegal under international law and have contributed significantly to making the situation in Venezuela worse. Only with the rollback of sanctions and allowing Venezuela to function as a sovereign State can one then judge if their system will work or not?
Oil…..
The usual corporate U.S. interference in south america countries causing sorrow for the poor of those countries
America is the world's greatest terrorist overthrowing, or attempting to overthrow, a foreign government since the Second World War. (* indicates successful ouster of a government)

Corruption, non absence of rule of law, violation of democratic principles and human rights, political persecution, violation of freedom of expression and transit, illegitimacy and illegality of the Presidency of Maduro … these factors justify the sanctions!!, but it seems that the guests do not come, and it's important to mention them …
Both system his rubbish to govern the world by. These continues just didn't have a choice coming out of colonialism. Both systems came out of institutional racism. Example WW1 both system fighting for control of Africa. Both these systems will be dead in the future
19:48; gotta love right-wing fox news propaganda. Gotta do their best to their corporate buddies making money.
Lol sanctions are not the reason, corruption, a shitty undiverse economy and a uscrupulus spending is to blame, what is this bullshit narrative?????
The United States of America is Venezuela problems. This is the only problem do not be stupid.
The Russians are coming. The US Economic Embargo and Economic Sanctons against Venezuela are hurting us and we see them as an act of war.
I live in Venezuela and I definitely support the democratically elected President Maduro and his government.
Fox News FUCKERS!!!
The Venezuelan government stole businesses from foreign investors. Does anyone really believe that these investors will continue to give money to a country which then appropriates that money? If you do, you're living in Venezuela……
Maduro has lost an election (badly) and instead of stepping down he sent the army into the streets with batons and live ammo. He is murdering his own people so he and his clique can stay in power. Is that socialism? (I didn't think so).
BTW: come on thRealNews – How do you manage to have a 1/2 an hour discussion about Venezuela naming insignificant factors like oil price or targeted sanctions and do not even once mention the elephant in the room? I also believed in Venezuela, I have been there and I loved it. I got cheated, I was wrong. Why can't you accept the same? This is why everybody hates us 🙁
So which sanctions made the Venezuela government replace oil workers with decades of experience with military personnel with no experience
I'd like to see a video explaining what Venezuela could have done better. There is definitely something to be learned here. I am a left leaning social democrat so I do not believe the criticism from the right or from capitalists and libertarians that socialism is automatically bad, indeed I support socialist programs but despite this nobody is perfect and i think it would be wrong to say that the government of Venezuela did nothing wrong…what should Venezuela done differently or better?
I'm Venezuelan, I live here, and I'm going to try to give you a non biased (pro or antigovernment vision) of what is happening right now.
The sanctions have been really bad, in one side, I'm not going to lie to you, I worked in the bank that had to assume the Central Bank functions after it's accounts were blocked and as a payer institution I saw how our payments of medicines or food were sent back by international.banks many times… we had to open accounts in risky banks to achieve our payments, and still were denied many times… so yes… it's been hard in one hand.
However,in the other hand, we have a government that hasn't have a qualified team to do its work, they pretty much have done anything to prevent this situation… for instance I was asked to do a work about our weak points in PDVSA, I said that we have been trading and consuming supplies to our oil industry from USA,which was stupid because sanctions were going to be worse… noone listened… maduros production policy has been nonexistent,to say the least, monetary policy have been disastrous, and corruption is everywhere…. so if you add all of this to the international sabotage you get all this disaster…
Also, after Chavez died many groups of power haven't respect maduro's decisions, just have been stealing from the people… and well here we are…
To end all this disaster, the opposition have to be the dumbest idiots in the world, their only plan is to get rid of maduro and ask to the FMI to a loan that will.kill Venezuela forever… and of course it will worsen this disaster… we don't even have an alternative….
It is very irresponsible to say nothing about the rampant corruption in the Venezuelan government. That is why this is not real news.
Can any country's economy thrive when it has a global sanction and embargo it has to fight against?
My brain is to small for tht things like this. Always when somone tell socialism is wrong, there are voices that seys it is a capitalist fault. Show me one nation in the World where True socialism works.
The biggest problem that Venezuela has is that fact that it happens to have a country over US oil. The US is fixing all that now.
typical low energy left wing commentary
The world should put sanctions against the devil US!
Venezuela's should have industrial laws
USA, sanctions, incompetence and corruption.. It is a joint effort.
At certain angles this man looks like President Bush!
why does the U.S. not like the Maduro / Chavez Government ? if any one can answer this
There’s flaws in any system. The massive consolidation of wealth In too few institutions really makes things worse for us. I bet eventually the ruling class will run away to mars and just leave us here. Mars is just free real-estate for them.
Beware, Venezuela is a warning, companies will start to do deliberate things in order Socialism not to work, especially if it come in more developed states like USA. Hold on, Hold on.
I will recommend a 276 page book by William Mitchell reclaiming the state. …an outstanding book!!!
Latin America is still under the Monroe Doctrine..
Socialism worked In Nazi Germany go figure..
They credit Venezuela's govt for the "progress" on redistribution, but they don't connect those policies to the current crisis. This is common pattern of good intentions bad results. Unfortunately learning from the past doesn't accompany this pattern.
On one hand, this channel is against climate change, on the other hand we are upset that US wouldn't sell Venezuela equipment to extract oil. Im confused again.
On one hand they demonize the "neoliberal" corporations such as Goodyear for inequality, on the other hand they blame US sanctions for running Goodyear out of town. Which one is it? Im so confused.
i agree the sanctions are bad but the root of the problem was epic mismanagement and the failure to plan for the cyclical nature of oil prices
there never was "socialism" in venezuela it was little more than patronage politics and empty bluster
real socialism is built from the ground up not doled out by the dear leader
Congratulations. I never heard so much bullshit about Venezuela´s "socialist" government in the same place.
They've strayed from saying "it wasn't real socialism" to "socialism was undermined by sinister forces".
