‘This is not an aberration’: Jan. 6 and America’s heart of darkness – Everything Law and Order Blog

The insurrectionary violence at the US Capitol that Donald Trump instigated on Jan. 6, 2021, marked another dark page in American history. But while many saw the events of Jan. 6 as an aberration that did not represent who or what America is supposed to be, the fact of the matter is that anti-democratic conservative minorities resorting to violence to maintain power is as American as apple pie. Confronting this fact is essential for understanding how the antecedents to today’s right wing have shaped our society—and how we can fight back today.

In this segment of The Marc Steiner Show, published one year after the attack on the Capitol, we discuss the long road to Jan. 6, the failures of corporate media and a feckless Democratic party to address the serious threats posed by the right, and what everyday people can do to stop the rising authoritarian tide. This is the first installment of “Rise of the Right,” a new, ongoing series on The Marc Steiner Show co-hosted by Marc and Bill Fletcher Jr. that critically and fearlessly examines the roots of today’s right-wing movement—where it came from, the existential threats it poses, and how to combat it.

In this conversation, Marc and Fletcher Jr. are joined by world-renowned journalist and historian of the American right Rick Perlstein. Perlstein’s most recent book, the fourth in an award-winning series investigating the history of modern American conservatism, is Reaganland: America’s Right Turn 1976–1980. Bill Fletcher Jr. has been an activist since his teen years and previously served as a senior staff person in the national AFL-CIO; he is the former president of TransAfrica Forum, a senior scholar with the Institute for Policy Studies, and the author of numerous works of fiction and non-fiction, including ‘They’re Bankrupting Us!’ And 20 Other Myths about Unions and The Man Who Fell from the Sky.

  1. Where is the talk of the ROOT CAUSES of these hate driven groups? Yes, algorhythms stir the pot, but the pot is built to stir — the "elite" class driving massive divide and conquer to divert attention to how they are vampire like sucking the wealth of the country into their hands. Remember "Mississippi Burning" and the line about poverty?

"My old man was just so full of hate that he didn't know that bein' poor was what was killing him."

It's not Dems/Repubs, it's the "elite" class against the rest of us.

  2. THE LEAFT IS SLEEPING!!!!!!!! THE RIGHT IS WELL ARMED!!!!!!!!!! THE LEAFT JUST TALKING!!!!!!!!!! LEAFT ARM YOU'RE SELF!!!!!!!! DONT FORGET GREENSBORO N. CAROLINA 1979!!!!!!!!!!

  3. How does this person have a platform? His lying Marxism play book is so blatant and ANTI AMERICAN! Misinformation and outrageous disinformation propaganda is sickening!

  4. BLM & ANTIFA are Terrorist criminals that has DESTROYED BILLIONS in communities. Yet, FAKE media calls them peaceful protest. Two of the co founders of BLM are being investigated for FRAUD. They took money raised for BLM and bought homes, cars and vacations $26K. How much was put back in to the black communities. NONE !!!! Jan 6 was FREE Americans protesting Voter corruption. Liberal nutt jobs will say other wise. President Trump back Americans RIGHTS & Done EVERYTHING he said he was going to do for America & So much more. BEST PRESIDENT EVER !

  5. Oh f*** it was just a mostly peaceful protest no f**** violent anything a couple people. But antifa and black lives matter can burn down cities and it's just peaceful protests right

  6. Yo, you guys are trying to fight centralized and excessive power, and then you speak out AGAINST January 6th? What the hell else could be a bigger attack on power than passed off citizens raiding a federal building?

Are you sure you actually understand your own beliefs?

  7. What your grandkids were trying to say is that the lower the ASVAB score the more likely they would join a cult.

  8. Hello Taya and Steven. I was wondering if you guys got my recent emails. There were a number of videos I sent to the police accountability report. Maybe if you didn't get the videos you can know that I sent some stuff for review. Since sending the videos things got juicier. Thank you guys for everything you do.

  9. I wasn't aware that we lived in a republic, on the federal scale anyway. I thought duopoly candidates were vetted/preselected and funded through corporate PACs, run by billionaires in league with unelected government bureaucracies in the defense and co-oped regulatory sectors, before ever being publicly introduced as candidates. I thought we had a system of gerrymandering that ensured regional one-party rule too. I thought we only had a relatively open and free society with a faux-democratic government because we've offshored all our subjugation to the countries we exploit for imperial ends, and so our people are too docile and distracted to require overt authoritarian rule, preferring a tribal gameshow format instead. But the global financial system crumbled in 2008, again, and people woke up to the reality of the global oligarchy.

  10. You have tech billionaires on the left who are censoring all opposing viewpoints, while holding huge contracts with state intelligence agencies. Jan 6th should have been bipartisan. Everyone is fed up with the oligarchy.

  11. it was basically a riot.. many of them working class. While these jackass ham left-leaning verbiage machine create even worse, useless aberration .. F**K this bullshit… Mainstream media, left or right, is finished. Divest and Boycott all such trash on YouTube (DEAD)

  12. I would consider January 6th, as rehearsal for something more violent and on a larger scale across the entire nation…

  13. The official line that the Civil War was about Slavery and nothing else is a BIG Lie. As far back as the 1810's and 1820's, some people in Europe were predicting that America would fracture into two or perhaps three separate nations, and their reasoning had NOTHING To Do With Slavery. The telegraph became commercially viable in the 1830's, and before then communication between the northernmost and southernmost parts of America was quite difficult, especially because the Eastern seaboard was heavily forested and very rocky. It could literally take weeks for a letter to travel from Atlanta to Boston. This lack of communication between North and South eventually led to the development of two distinct cultures with different value systems within the same nation. The issue of Slavery was just a part of the cultural divide between North and South.

The North won the Civil War on the battlefield, but socially and culturally the Civil War never ended. Instead of somehow mediating and reconciling with Southern values, the Liberal North refused to admit at all that such a cultural and moral division even existed in the first place and started writing history books that perpetrated the Lie that the Civil War was about Slavery and nothing else.

That Lie has remained submerged in the Public Consciousness, like a taboo of sorts, yet rearing its ugly head whenever the BIG Lie was threatened. It was Donald Trump who was astute enough to recognize this underlying social volatility. He seized on that volatility at just the right moment in history and, for better or for worse, played it to his political advantage. The Insurrection of 01/06/2021, and all this talk lately about secession is living proof that the Civil War still continues in the hearts and minds of many Americans, and yet the Northern Liberals are still denying the reality of the great cultural and moral divide that rages ever greater in America, now personified in the legions of Trump supporters.

  14. A unarmed crowd tried to overthrow the govt…..RIIIIIIGGGHHTTT. Can not wait to the next outlandish claim comes..very entertaining.

  15. I continue to not be able to get any current news on the YouTube channel, so I typed in "real news", in the search bar, and this video came up. I try to keep an open mind when I see these kinds of videos, because to me, this is not news. It is an "opinion piece" about three people who have very strong feeling about anyone who doesn't see their point of view. So, I watched the whole video, hoping at some point that at least one of these people would make a point about what is going on right now in our country. Unfortunately, all they wanted to talk about was things that happened decades ago. They seem to have a real hatred of all things Republican. What amazes me is, these people are supposed to be really smart about this country's history. They have written books, and been invited to speak on shows like this, so when I hear them saying it is the "radical right" that is doing harm to our country, I have to scratch my head. Are they living in a different America than I am? While Trump may not have been as PC as these people would have liked, it was a fact that this country was doing far better with him as President, than the current one in the White House. What nobody will say out loud is if only the National Guard would have been allowed to be in place at the Capitol Building on January 6, like Trump asked for the day before, what would you these people have to crow about? I see video after video of people pushing barricades down while the "armed" police just run and hide like there was an army of people with guns coming at them. Does anybody live in a city or small town where people could just bully their way through a barricade like that, and not have the police tase and club the crap out of the people doing the pushing? And as for the people just being able to break into one of the most secure buildings in the country, with no guns, while all those "armed" police on the outside, as well as all the "armed" security and secret service on the inside, just stood back and allowed them to do it, makes no sense to anyone with common sense. Of course, if the NG would have been allowed to be in place on that day, we wouldn't even be talking about this. Now I have given my respectful point of view for the people in the video to see. I know they will never see it, but I would love to hear them "history" their way around this comment. Or any of the other "spelling police" for that matter. Isn't it funny, how Republicans are called the "right", and Democrats are usually called radical leftist? Bring it if you dare?

  16. This craziness is a war between Insane 🙋🏻's and Semi-sane 🙋🏻‍♂'s…. the rest of us are powerless spectators until hate & greed kills us all 🚀

  17. This discussion is a perfect mix of social-imperialism and US-american exceptionalism. No wonder why the US so-called 'lef'[sic] is not going anywhere. You guys should wake up to your own history of radical internationalism (mainly from the Black Radical Tradition of people like Du bois in his later years or the Robeson couple) instead of rehashing Chomsky-like arguments of blaming the Republicans as if all the evil comes from them. The US as a system is Evil, born out of genocide and slavery, 'dripping from head to foot, from every pore, with blood and dirt' (to paraphrase the Old Man).
