Even though he was framed for the killing of a local police officer, sentenced without a fair trial, and imprisoned for 44 years, former Black Panther and dearly departed TRNN Executive Producer Marshall “Eddie” Conway never stopped organizing. In 1980, while incarcerated himself as a political prisoner, Eddie helped organize a prisoners’ educational outreach program called “To Say Their Own Word,” which brought thinkers and scholars to Maryland Penitentiary to speak about topics like US fascism, capitalism, the prison-industrial complex, government surveillance, and many other issues that have become even more pressing today. Through their organizing work, Eddie and his fellow inmates were responsible for dramatically increasing literacy levels among prisoners inside the Maryland Penitentiary and transforming the lives of countless inmates.

This special edition of Rattling the Bars features a mini-documentary that lays out an oral history of the “To Say Their Own Word” program, with testimonies from Saleem El-Amin, Mansa Musa, Gerald Dent, and more. This mini-documentary, produced as part of a collaborative partnership between The Real News Network, UMBC Special Collections, and the Baltimore Field School, will be screened publicly at the TRNN studio in Baltimore on Wednesday, April 26, 2023.

  1. What's really needed right now is a mass organization movement forcing the prison industrial complex into going green.
All new and existing facilities must be built or retrofitted with environmentally sustainable materials.
All water, power, and heating/cooling provided by renewable energy only NO EXCEPTIONS.
All care packages must be 100% recyclable. Absolutely no wastage allowed.
All meals will be completely vegan.
Absolutely no junk food including heavily salted or sugary snacks. Highly processed foods would be phased out for good.
All reading, video, or any material to prisoners must be exclusively geared towards the environmental movement.
All prisoners will be indoctrinated into environmentalism and sustainability.

    Remember folks…
    There is no planet b.

  2. Niiice. Unprecedented. I think it’s great. Folks need to understand how they got where they are to be fully accountable for their actions. Literacy is a huge issue in society and definitely in the prisons. Educate to liberate! I love it. Out here in the so called Free world more of us could learn to say our own words. Thank you Eddie Conway. One love. May you Rest In Peace and power. Nicely done mi gente, nicely done.

  3. Eddie Conway……just sayin' the name, man, just sayin' the name
    IS SO DAMN GOOD.
    Thanks Mansa, you too!

  4. Literacy, yes. Intact families produce more literate kids, therefore fewer incarcerated adults. Turn off the TV and crack a book!

  5. Started my 5 dollar per month donation 🎉
It's not much but if you're reading this you could maybe do it too 🤷🏾
