Trump’s efforts to overthrow the Maduro government in Venezuela reached new heights when it halted a Senate resolution supporting self-proclaimed president Guaidó because it also included a line against the use of US military force in Venezuela. We discuss the ramifications with CEPR’s Mark Weisbrot

  1. American citizens need to wake up and face up to the despicable acts their government commits in their name, before war comes to their doorstep. Easy to wage wars somewhere else. Defending your home, street, town and country on own soil is something entirely different. Americans never experienced this. They are used to watching wars on tv, then flick the switch and …. it"s gone. War is over until tomorrow. They have no empathy, no sense of responsibility for the atrocities they're shown on tv. With the state the media is in today, it is likely they won't even get to see atrocities and are only being told "how brave our soldiers are and how great there most powerful military is."
The US has been using these tactics for many, many years, causing a lot of suffering and destruction, only to turn their back on the people they helped put in power. Broken promises. They cannot be trusted. See the putsch they instigated in Ukraine. People there suffer because the government that the West wanted is a bunch of right wing nationalists led by a sick megalomaniac called Petro Poroschenko. This guy still believes the US and Europe have his back. What an ignoramus. Guaido falls in the same category of TUP's – Temporarily Useful People. Also he doesn't know yet that's he's destined for the political scrap heap.

  2. Who's killing people in Venezuela? Is it Financial embargo or Maduro? Maduro is not the legitimate president because, on the first term he was elected, he imprisoned most of the opposition leaders, some were brutally tortured and killed and others went on exile. For the second term, things were easier for Maduro. He manipulated the electoral system. About the opposition, the few who stayed in the country had to cooperate with Maduro's regime or suffer the consequences. For both terms, the head of the office in charge of counting the votes, was someone from Maduro's own regime. Without true opposition, it is not dificcult to win elections, is it?

Only 2 million people supported Maduro's regime six years ago. Those are the ones who were written in the books of Maduro's party which is the Bolivarian Party ( a mixture of Socialism, Communism and Castro-Cuban system) and who had the right to get food and medical service. The other 34 million people had to suffer…struggling with hyperinflation and reduced salaries. With a minimum salary in Venezuela, you can only buy 2 cans of sardines per month in few supermarkets, only after spending many hours in long rows that can cover many blocks away of the store, although there are many supermakets, most of them are practically empty.

From those 34 million people who hate Maduro's regime, 5 million people left the country, and they are the ones who can send some money to their relatives in Venezuela and that is how some people live there. The ones who do not receive help from abroad, who are the majority of people, have to look for food in the garbage in the streets or steal with knifes.

2 million out of those 5 million are here, in Colombia, which is the largest exodus of people in Latin American History, and it just happened in a matter of months. They came here and prefer to beg for money and sleep in the streets but, at least with the money they get here, by begging, they can buy some food although they have nowhere to sleep but in the streets…a few lucky ones find a menial job…we have now many venezuelan lawyers, doctors, engineers who are washing cars or cleaning toilets or serving tables in some cafeterias….and some venezuelan women who don't beg but find in prostitution, a fast way to get a decent income…so, for sure, Maduro does not represent those passionate loyal followers you mention in your question….International obstruction? It is only in the imagination of the ones who defend Dictator Maduro…Maduro is trading with many countries…especially the ones who share his ideology, so even if US obstructs oil trade and commerce in general, there are more markets…but most of the money Venezuela gets in from foreign commerce, goes to the hands of the Maduro's military people, who control everything, including food that enters into the country…but the big business for Maduro is in Drugs…Cocaine…Maduro's Military buy the cocaine here in the colombian border (a drug who americans love and I don't know why) and these corrupt Military have established routes to USA, Europe , Africa and Asia….most of the Mexican cartels get the drug from Maduro, but the route has so many countries involved that is difficult to trace all the suppliers ….and by the way, this is information that Pablo Escobar's Hitman, Popeye, discovered when he spent 20 years in jail, paying time together with some venezuelan drug lords captured in Colombia who worked directly with Maduro… that explains why production of Cocaine in Colombia increased so much…when Maduro got to power, illegal cocaine plantations were harvested in 50,000 hectares and now there are 200,000 hectares….mostly controlled by the terrorist communist colombian guerrilla called ELN on the border and this ELN terrorist group help Maduro control the western side of Venezuela…but also, there are other terrorist groups who generate chaos inside Venezuela….those are: Hamas and Hezbollah groups from the Middle East that Maduro invited to join the party in order to be closer to the US …also, many Cuban terrorists…called COLECTIVOS….who control the security intelligence of Venezuela and kill and torture the people who pose a threat to the regime….By the way, the new Interim president is safe because he has protection inside the US Ambassy and Maduro knows that if he touches Juan Guaido, US could invade Venezuela…which is is already invaded by russian special forces, logistic personnel from China who maintain the oil facilities and other criminals.

Trump did not choose Guaido…it was the Colombian President and Brazilian president who together decided to support someone who can make serious opposition to Maduro's Regime. We now have a problem here with 2 million venezuelan who are sleeping in the streets….and that is a heavy burden for Colombia….and 500,000 in Brazil and the other 2,5 million are scattered all over the world…so we, venezuelans and colombians, have declared that Maduro's time is up, Trump administration has joined the will of the people of Colombia and Venezuela and endorsed this decision. Most venezuelans, who don't support Maduro, agree the US is the best option for oil and mineral exploitation because they have the technology for doing that. Third world countries cannot exploit oil on their own or dig for minerals. China and Russia also have the technology to rig the oil but they are not trustworthy patners. When US was in charge of oil in Venezuela many decades ago, the country was rich, and when Chavez and Maduro regime took control of oil industry, they ruined the country.

  3. This is just like Israel always wanting to "negotiate" with the Palistinians who always have to give up more land and more freedom. There's nothing to negotiate with the "opposition" that stands for violent over throw of a democratically elected government.

  4. Democratic and Republicans, the same thing, there’s no difference regarding to foreing affairs: just looking for WARS around the world!
    We need peace for all!!!!!

  5. The piggy Hawks in USA are trying to repeat the same trick they did in Ukraine where Victor Yanukovych fled the country in fear for his life, except Maduro is not Yanukovych and he's staying put to defend Venezuela''s wealth against the biggest Bully in the block. I really hope the US refrains from attacking Venezuela because according to this video below, they do have a lot of the new Russian weapons that could surprise the attackers and extend the conflict as it's happening in Syria where the US and the Saudis paid for ISIS to unseat Assad, but thanks to Russian Air Force he's still in his post. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8ijgm656H4

  6. 1:38 broadcasting media: please stop comically butchering the German language and names: "Weissbrot" is pronounced vice-brote, weiss meaning white, brot meaning bread. It is comical to see staff in media comically fall over themselves to say every other (sexy) language correctly but make fools of themselves with german. Go ahead, say "Nicaragua", or "Macron"

  7. US cannot implement the goal because senator Rubio has a "small hand" and Trump has "a small hand" too. Imperialism and Zionism are on the decline every where. The decay of US monopoly capitalism has generated a permanent crisis and individuals such as Rubio, Graham, Menendez, among other endangered war criminal species. The whole structure is collapsing and living on debt and is good for Trump to take care of the country only. Those senators are living on handouts from the Industrial Military Complex or plainly corporate food stamps. No one should take their opinions. Salam to all peace-loving people and always the oppressed people will win.

  8. If America is today, a "proud" nation, we are asses to the rest of the world acting like a wild bull in the "China" shop. Who will "intervene" when the table is turned? Corporate capitalism is sucking the life out of everything it touch's, King Midas in reverse. Producer and consumer needs no middle man scammer to siphon our labor and commerce and censure our voice.

  9. And now Trump is threatening his own country! He is hinting that he already has the arrangements made to declare a National Emergency which in reality is Martial Law. It's Trump, remember! Laws and details mean nothing to him. He will stop all investigations, personally confirm any one he wants to do anything he pleases, change or make any law, put soldiers on the streets to kill American citizens. Sounds crazy? Which day of this Presidency has not been completely crazy? He keeps saying , "It's coming".

  10. It's easy to blame the US. But Japan, China, and other countries want to get in as well. So "Who's Your Daddy?"
    The Cold War is Over!
The Domino Theory no longer applies.

  11. Marco Rubio, senator from Florida would not only have no idea but not care what his constituents think.
The last time we saw him at a town hall meeting, he got upset when one of the kids asked him about a contribution. He's never shown his face here again because he says, "they're just too uncivil". So as far as us being "too uncivil"…….,
Fuck you Rubio and I will throw rotten tomatoes at you the next time I see you. Then you can say honestly that we are uncivil. Worthless senator!

  12. Socialism is not a type of government, but a form of society, a most social
and outgoing moral fabric as opposed to a self-centered gaited community.

  13. Marco was busy pushing the anti bds bill in the US Senate during the attack on Venezuela which I think is bad for you Americans

  14. it's hard to see how maduro can survive an oil embargo, unless they can get the chinese to buy the balance. even so, it doesn't alleviate the actual root cause of the problem that venezuelans are facing (which is frequently very badly reported across all media), namely the absolute economic dependence that venezuela has on the united states for both oil exports and food imports. i mean, you can point to the sanctions as the problem, but underlying it is the dependence – if venezuela was not so dependent on america, the sanctions would not be so effective. venezuela's focus should be ending that dependence, and it's very strange that they seem to have minimal interest in doing so.

it's this dependence that has always made me skeptical about reported plans of us overthrow. i always said that you'll know they're serious when they actually go directly after the oil, which they are in fact now doing.

    so, what can venezuela do?

well, they need to find ways to grow their own food, which, contrary to popular myth, they do have the resources to do. it's often reported that venezuela is not self-reliant, but this isn't a function of an inability to be self-reliant, but a consequence of the oil dependence – and, in fact, a part of chavez' legacy. a part of it is an economic phenomenon called dutch disease but there is also a lingering presence of the banana republic plantations that formed the basis of the economy before they found oil and that focus the agriculture industry around the export of food. if they would do things like seize the food export industries (which mostly export to north america and western europe) and create policies to bring back the farms that were abandoned, they would be able to break the reliance they have on iowan corn.

maduro insists he doesn't want to be a traitor. but, he needs to stop sitting on his hands and actually react to what's happening around him – he needs to stop being the petty bourgeois figurehead that he actually is, and start being the socialist firebrand that the west, allies and detractors alike, like to pretend that he is.

it should be a simple problem to solve. they have the resources. but, they don't want to cut the cord.
