Update (7/25/23): The International Brotherhood of Teamsters have reportedly reached a tentative agreement with UPS just days before the current contract was set to expire on July 31. If a new deal was not reached this week, 340,000 UPS workers were prepared to hit the picket line on Aug. 1 in what would have been one of the largest strikes in US history. The contract negotiations process has been a roller coaster, filled with the twists and turns of bad offers and parties walking away from the bargaining table. What brought us to this point? What are the key issues workers have been prepared to strike over? Will the rank and file approve the latest tentative agreement, or is a strike still on the table?

In this special live panel discussion with Teamster UPSers, in collaboration with In These Times and The Upsurge podcast, we’ll discuss the latest developments in the contract negotiations and what’s at stake for UPS workers and the wider labor movement.

  1. I would not invite politicians who did a complete 180° on the railroad workers when it came time to vote. They said these same speeches and spit in their face. The media will influence the consumers with the same supply line and cost of living scare tactics, and all though I'm not sure the state will be able to find an antiquated law to hurt workers with this time, if it comes down to state intervention, the politicians will vote with the corporations again, Except for the 11 members of congress who voted to allow the railroad workers to strike (none of which are in this video).

  2. O’Brien would make a damn good politician! A bunch of promises up front just to deliver absolutely nothing!! What a coward!

  3. How much are thier ltl drivers getting paid per mile is what im trying to figure out

  4. I love ups i just wish the was a portion of the contract that let full time employees transfer within the state without losing everything or having to quit and be re hired. But other than that. Go 886

  5. I haven’t worked at UPS for 35 years but would walk the picket line like the rest. I left UPS in 1988 when I was 38 years old making over $17/hour as a part timer working next to other part timers making $8/hour. I started at $5.15/hour in 1971, over $14/hour in 1979 when trucking was deregulated. Everyone started wanting to do a good job, but management was so mean and evil that it didn’t take long before everyone hated them. As an example of how bad it was, they would try to fire a perfectly good employee to intimidate people.

  6. Teamster for 29 years. I'm on both sides of this issue. I'm part time at ups and I own my own business. It is truly hard to believe some of the things the company has done over my years to not show decency for their workers. I think it is a corporate mindset because small business like mine already offer amazing pay and take care of their employees. Corporations don't owe allegiance to the worker, but the shareholders. It is actually legally binding and a fiduciary responsibility.

That being said, Many of you should find it inhumane to understand those trucks don't have ventilation or air conditioning! I used to load in trailers that were over 120 degrees hot in the summer months. It is a dangerous environment. We all worked during covid supplying the needs of the country with pride too, but never got any extra pay or special recognition. However, they did pay new workers sometimes more than those with the company more than 10 years during these past 3 years.

I wish it could be true we don't need unions, I'm not a major union advocate either, but I do see their need in negotiating with companies like this on fair work prac and wages. I'm a capitalist and not a Democrat btw. I have a unique perspective, one that is albeit shared by many other Co workers I know who work part time and also have to supplement with other jobs and or businesses working most of the day light hours of each day.

  7. This contract is a joke. It’s a smokescreen for private interest and corporate greed. As usual it’s full of loopholes for the company to abuse labor and the contract. Don’t be fooled by numbers released to the public.

  8. The man is spot on! Language is most important. U.P.S loves playing games and twisting language. Pushing grevances back for months if not years.
It is really demeaning when we had an administration at local 710 led by Pat Flynn that made the company nervous when I was in freight with Roadway. Going to one that U.P.S snickers about when I say I am filing a grevance. No matter what. If you dont have a local that will fight for you. Language means nothing. The Schaffer/Cales leadership operates like the previous Hoffa administration. "We cant tell U.P.S how to run its operation "
Or better yet from the last V.P. Ron Dillon "Be happy to have a job". Yup that is our situation working under Local 710.

  9. A firm No VOTE for me because long term part-timers should get a catch up raises of $5 instead of $1.50, need to keep up with inflation. (21 years teamster here)

  10. Solidarity 💪🏼💪🏼👍🏻👍🏻☝🏼

  11. I work in aerospace. This is insulting to skilled labor. I feel like I wasted my time building parts for aircraft when I could have just been a package delivery every boy. WTF.

  12. This is profound knowledge for a lot of new and you ng employees. Mr Hooker is 1000% correct. Let's read this thing together, maybe some webinars so we can all go thru it defensively . Stay strong 💪 stay motivated , stay educated 💪

  13. UPS Amazon Walmart Fed Ex gates mask tesla they’re all out for their selves they don’t care about mother earth they don’t care about her people either

  14. The money isn't the problem for part timers now! Its the hours… but that's just what it is a part time job. Seem like a lot of part timers want 30 a hour for part time work.

  15. question, I'm newer to the union. do you have to pay a TDU membership to vote or is being a part of the union in general good enough?

  16. I’m voting NO this is bogus contact please vote NO this is the time to ask for what we deserve 7 dollars is a slap in the face

  17. I love being a teamster. I’m going on 5 years now and I’d say the biggest failure of the union is new member education. I hope our new leadership makes new member education more seriously.

  18. This is the most leverage we've ever had. And this is all we got? We may never see leverage like this again..
The way Teamsters are framing this.. we will look like brats voting no. I dont like this.

    Btw..
There has been a tier system between 22.2 and 22.3 for appx 25 yrs. 🤷

Seems like its all about Amazon.. interesting.

  19. Ups aint sweat enough. With a hour of coming back to the table after an “insulting offer”. We strike a deal..👀. Stop it. Its a NO from me at this moment.

  20. A/C “In larger delivery vehicles and in all package cars purchased after 1-1-2024” I’ll never deliver out of an a/c fitted package car.

  21. AMI in the east bay, ca is $115k. They’re guaranteeing us $22k below the poverty line. 😐

  22. I really don’t like the contract, for all the work we put in as part time and full timers have done within the time of a pandemic they turn around and give us full timers 2.50 cent seriously at least 5 dollars off jump. Seeing this got me mad smh

  23. Vote NO! maximillian scab alvarez gives the perspective of in these times, the proffesional managerial class. They want to control our energy. We need to take our energy & organize the vote no.

  24. We need to wait till there quarterly earnings are revealed. Didnt they purposely push back that info till after August 8th. Im sure there is more money that can be shared.

  25. It’s a good deal for a 30 year old driver willing to work 20 hr ot it’s around 160k a year I am to old for that I need to see the language on my central states pension is! Don’t fly over me!
