‘What is Juneteenth to the incarcerated Black person?’ | Rattling the Bars – Everything Law and Order Blog

Juneteenth has become a federal holiday—yet prison slavery under the 13th Amendment continues. Uprooting the prison industrial complex is vital to completing the abolition of slavery. In California, the Californians United for a Responsible Budget (CURB) coalition aims to close 10 state prisons in the next 5 years as part of the People’s Plan for Prison Closure. CURB Executive Director Amber-Rose Howard joins Rattling the Bars to discuss this bold plan.

Amber-Rose Howard is a poet, public speaker and organizer from Pomona, California. She currently serves as Executive Director of CURB.

  1. THATS WHY I SAID AFRICAN AMERICAN SHOULD FIGHT FOR AN ECONOMIC PACKAGE / NOT JUNETEENTH . NOT MAYTEEN . PEOPLE NEED TO WAKE UP. YOU NEED LAND FOR REAL ESTATE BUSINESS JOBS. IF U FIGHT FOR LAND. THEN BLACK PEOPLE CAN BE MORE ECONOMICALLY INCLINED. YOU WILL NEED THOSE MASS LAND SPACE TO PUT INMATES WHO ARE LOCK UP.

  2. TO THOSE INCARCERATED, LEARN TO BE FREE WITHIN YOURSELF. FREEDOM IS A MIND THING. All those incarcerated are not criminals.

  3. I think Juneteenth is a great thing, that accomplishes it's goal. It does basically nothing for black people, but the gesture will send a lot of us to the pole to vote for the Democratic. The period after slavery ended was worse than slavery. As a slave you were property, you have to maintain your property for it to work right. After slavery you were arrested and could be worked to death while in jail. Slavery never ended if you were in prison, so guess we're most blacks are in this country jail. Most put there by the laws written by mister Biden himself.

  4. I hope if people call for the closing of prisons, they will ask that they be turned into housing facilities for the homeless and mental health facilities for those suffering from mental illness. What about some reforming of prisons by inmates themselves? They too often don't help prisons do what society says they were originally designed to do or later called on to do – correct individual's behavior/rehabilitate them. What about corruption within prisons? If to some degree society acknowledges it is a problem within police departments, why is the obvious same by administrations and staff in prisons ignored as well? We know it has occurred, so why is it not monitored/made a priority? Why does the Right news media (Fox News especially) report on the corruption in police Departments and prisons? why don't they make a big deal about the unjust killing of White people and by police officers if crime and law and order is so important to them? if they had done that, maybe the problem of killing Black and other non-White people would not be the problem it is today, that has spread beyond just unlawful policing and leading us into a possible civil war or something akin to it. What is more unlawful than when those sworn to uphold the law, have no regard for it themselves? Both sides of this social/political divide are not being realistic about the situation problem while the average peaceful law-abiding citizen suffer because of both sides' unreasonableness and extremisms. Drug use and the selling of them especially in a deadly manner is not seen as the significant cause of much of the problems we see today. We Black people don't even take it seriously. That is how many of us can say that "our people sell drugs to survive'. We have heard this for decades. We have been in an unending drug epidemic for over half a century and our attitude toward drug use crime/violence is still a dismissive/indifferent one, in spite us or some of us proclaiming to the world that our lives matter – period! – really? Is that what we have been demonstrating for over half a century?

  5. Our education system is also incredibly destructive. And so is compulsory schooling. We should be protecting the rights of the individual so that the community thrives. People need land and permanent homes. They need to know how to take care of themselves independent of the system, which means growing food, natural medicine, and trades.

  6. Another initiative that needs to go forward is ending the corruption within the courts, family courts, and non government agencies like child protective services..

  7. I one hundred percent agree with ending the prison industrial complex but I would like to say something. I live in Tennessee, and I am white woman. I have been in jails numerous times and was a state inmate one of those times, but here in Tennessee blacks were the minority in those jails, sometimes there were none there at all. Just an observation. I'm not saying racism doesn't exist. honestly I don't know what my point is, I guess it's to ask if we can agree that this is happening to everyone? I think we should end victimless crime prosecution and the war on drugs as well. If we end those things we can significantly lower the people being put in prisons.

  9. Thus brother has English like he from the 1800 hundreds. Dis, Dat, wif, brother I'm black libraries remember education is a passport to freedom Malcom X said. We (I'm a black Democrat) always demand this demand that while we bring nothing to the table. There is no accountability. If you don't bring something to the table you taking something off the table.

  10. The best intentions in the world are useless if the people who would benefit from those intentions and most are not willing to take part in those beneficial resources a lot of the problem in the black community is particularly in our younger people there is very little accountability and there's very little morality. Even at the Juneteenth celebration good example at the Juneteenth celebration in 2023 young blacks began looting shooting and stampeding what kind of Celebration is that?

  11. The question I would have for her is we have systemic crime in our neighborhood some of the reasons why so many of us are in prison is because we commit crimes just as simple as that 6999 of us killed each other and 2020 compared to 185 white cops killing I'm not a math expert but according to the numbers of black person is more likely to be killed by another black person and anybody else fact but she's ignoring at which the typical typical Democrat response to the problem. I'm not a racist I'm a black Democrat that's a realist. We have to approach the problem of mass incarceration some kind of a accountability of those in the black community who would willfully and unjustifiable E commit crime mostly on their own people you like one of those racks on a spinning wheel inside a cage. You running and running and running your mouth but you not getting nothing done

  12. 13. Mixed feelings.
Some are in prison due to lies, being framed and victims of systemic racism.
Others are degenerate thugs with no conscious. They are a disgrace to the black race.
We must discern and know the difference.

  14. “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,”

There is nothing new under the sun.

YET… “How long wilt thou go about, O thou backsliding daughter? for the LORD hath created a new thing in the earth, A woman shall compass a man.”

  15. If not for a sinister reason, why would a Hungarian billionaire want to install district attorneys in poor and working-class American communities that empower violent predators?

  16. That's a lot of bull, another plan to let black people to have rights that white people don't have. Let crminals go and set them up with money.slavery has been over for longtime .but people still still want free stuff for it. If done the crime they should do the time

  17. Learn the law starting with your free national name, your state and federal Constitution, and jurisdiction. The rules of civil and criminal procedure. Corpus Delicti and the difference between what is legal compared to what is lawful. Case law= precedent = STARE DECISIS.

  18. Criminals dont hurry be happy …la laa laa ..be happy lalalaaa ..😄😅😎👻💥💨🔥👀🤙🎷🥁🎤💉💊🧫🧪⚗️💊

  19. Thanks for the enlightening discussion.
I wish you Peace, and Freedom from want, pain and exploitation by the violent and powerful.

Though I can't ever get past the thought that the 40 acres and a mule idea is predicated on the notion that the guarantor actually owned those acres in the first place — and (although mules can be awesome) the recipient seems to be extremely limited by the few decades lifespan of the infertile livestock.

  20. Curve should fight to eliminate the provision in the 13th amendment that allows indentured servitude as a punishment. You might have to change your wording in “closing prisons” because the opposition is strong like revise the “corrections system”. Reinvestment in community issues is a step in the right direction but that money might have to change the taxation system, to eliminate the poverty trap. Keep up the good fight.
