"With the intent to contain the Soviet Union." Close, but not Quite. It was to contain communism. Now, that sounds like it means the same thing, but it doesn't. For one, by being against a political position rather than a country, they justified to themselves a lot of rigged elections and suppressing of political groups in the West that had nothing to do with the USSR. From start to finish, NATO was always about control, not defense or containment.
