22,010 years lost is a bit of a misnomer. because the taxpayers paid $33,000 per year on average to house a prisoner. I'm going to leave it to you to do the math, but someone is getting that money from the taxpayers for all these wrong convictions.

OMG- I just ran across this video. I don't know if anyone will ever read this, but when I was a little teenager in California, way back in the early 1970s, I went through an illegal search and seizure. At the time, I have to admit that I was no angel. I was living with a boyfriend who was selling drugs, although I was not doing or selling the drugs, myself. Since I didn't really didn't really have anything to do with it, I considered it his issue. However, the law didn't see it that way (which I now can't blame them).
A.nyway, since they searched (illegally, without a warrant) and couldn't find anything, they planted a bottle of pills in my bedroom that were illegal drugs. And then, they supposedly "discovered" them on the bedroom window sill (where I watched the woman-nark put them).

The CIU is a creation that comes after the fact. With such a long line of falsely incarcerated individuals to investigate and re-investigate it serves to delay freedom.
I would say if this office were multiplied and staffed across all jurisdictions a difference would be made to correct wrongful convictions and deconstruct the private prison system.

The DA in Brooklyn started a unit like that and before he passed away atleast ten people were freed because of the criminal cops and prosecutor who railroaded them.It is up to like almost 30 people freed after spending half their life in prison.
