In 1980, Eddie Conway participated in and helped organize a prisoners’ educational outreach program called “To Say Their Own Words,” where thinkers and scholars came to Maryland Penitentiary and spoke about topics like impending U.S. fascism, the prison-industrial complex, capitalism, increased surveillance, and many other issues that have become even more pressing today. These speakers included Amiri Baraka, Askia Muhammad, Bruce Franklin, Nijole Benokraitis, and Charlie Cobb.

In this speech, delivered to Maryland Penitentiary prisoners in 1980, journalist and civil rights activist Charlie Cobb discusses his experiences reporting in Rhodesia and the U.S., and explains how the news industry’s interests influence people’s understanding of themselves and the world.

  1. This guy's basic premise is b***** United States and other countries are not privileged,
Privilege is something given and received. The United States took and made intentionally what it is today. There's no privilege, no one is over privileged or underprivileged. Would you say for example the king of the jungle is privileged because he's a lion?. Is an antelope underprivileged?. If you want what the other guy has, do what the other guy does,if you don't and you end up in second place it's not the winners fault.

  2. Did you know that they were running military exercises of planes being hijacked and flown in to the WTC on 9/11 and did not tell the American people

  3. Charlie Cobb spoke at about 7:45 to 7:50 in this video about Russia having invaded Afghanistan and that this was used by Washington DC, the White House admin., et al, to promote US warring against Russia there, and while this is in part true, it's far from the whole story. First, Washington was working against the central and democratically elected govt of Afghanistan, which evidently was good, such as respecting women's rights to not be required to wear Burqas and to have the right to education. Washington fomented the war, and this was based on a plan by Zbigniew Brzezinski when he was US National Security Advisor during the Jimmy Carter administration, coming up with the plan to basically force Russia to come to the aid of the central and democratically elected govt of Afghanistan and presenting this plan to Jimmy Carter, who agreed to the plan, after which it popularly became called the Carter Doctrine . Russia saw that what was being criminally done against the central Afghan govt was wrong and impermissible, so invaded only to try to help the Afghan govt, to try to help protect it, therefore acting for defence and not offence. Brzezinski was later, I think during the 1990s, interviewed by the media called Le Monde of France about this, the interviewer asking Brzezinski if he thought his plan mis-called the Carter Doctrine was worthwhile and Brzezinski gleefully said yes. He wanted to draw Russia to defeat like happened to the US in Vietnam due to the US war on that country. Brzezinski admitted this in the interview on Le Monde . Washington, through the CIA working with the Pakistani ISI, saw to the forming, arming, … of the Afghan Mujahideen to fight against the "invading" Russian forces and this of course came to be used for creating Washington's Al Qaeda , as well as the Taliban forming out of the Mujahideen forces.

OF COURSE this wasn't publiic information in 1980 and probably wasn't until plenty of years later, though there likely remain plenty of people who are still ignorant of the above bit of history, mostly unspoken history in "official circles". However, Charlie omitted a very important fact and it's that US media, there surely also being examples with some foreign media, LIE A LOT. Some can be blatant lies and media also intentionally covers up important truths that the public ethically must be told about in order to become as well informed as possible at any given time ; and then there's "slanting" so-called news, and exaggerations. They commit plenty of " Yellow journalism ", https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow_journalism. Quote: " Yellow journalism and the yellow press are American terms for journalism and associated newspapers that present little or no legitimate, well-researched news while instead using eye-catching headlines for increased sales.[1] Techniques may include exaggerations of news events, scandal-mongering, or sensationalism. By extension, the term yellow journalism is used today as a pejorative to decry any journalism that treats news in an unprofessional or unethical fashion.[2] In the UK, a roughly equivalent term is tabloid journalism, meaning journalism characteristic of tabloid newspapers, even if found elsewhere. … ". I think much of what Charlie said is valid and it's just that he omitted some points that could have been included, even when the speech would be somewhat longer.

  4. So the news is not news. It's biased, selective and represents the story that the powerful want to be told. Has it ever been different? This talk is a good lesson on how it doesn't work for the commoners. This is not news lol. If you think this is news, welcome to the real world in turmoil.

  5. ppl have to get tired of listening to blk ppl tiptoeing around with words. no one can be inspired or motivated to move forward. Change is here and tiptoeing to save ppls feeling is foolish. hence why no one has taken blks serious. oppressed will always resist oppression, it is the natural evolution.

What do oppressed want? to not be oppressed
How do oppressed fight back? BY ANY MEANS NECCESARY, THEY HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE AND EVERYTHING TO GAIN

  6. I'm from Australia. It was colonised 230 years ago. It's been an open cut mine for the rich ever since and we don't get a cent. Aboriginals get a hefty welfare package just for being Aboriginal (to their alcoholic detriment) and we are a developed nation nonetheless. Africa is fucked coz they are a bunch of tribal war Lords with first world AK-47s. It's always the white guys fault for the complete lack of accountability of the black guy. Plain and simple. Need a non African case study? Try Hong Kong. Native Asians who do anything to bring back British colonialism right now right.
