With a new Democratic administration in place and so many union contracts about to expire, 2021 could be a major turning point in the labor movement. In this segment of “The Marc Steiner Show,” Marc is joined by longtime union organizer and Boston’s SEIU Local 888 Chief of Staff Rand Wilson to discuss how labor can seize this moment and turn 2021 into a year of mass solidarity.

  1. I am a retired United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of American, local 690 Little Rock Arkansas. I have worked as an under cover salt on an organizing campaign, among other things. Trustee for my local and delicate to the regional council.
We need to get the churches involved in our unionizing efforts. That’s what the republicans did and they read a much different Bible than I did.

  2. Bargaining units are the key to bringing back work to the US citizen and improving the lives of everyone. Prosperity that is created by those who produce goods sold or services that create revenue should be shared. The destruction of the unions by the Ronnie Reagans that have disenfranchised the US worker by taking jobs away through moving industry overseas and reducing wages (money, insurance, retirement funds, etc.) needs to be reversed. So what if prices go up. I'd rather pay a US CITIZEN than the Chinese government for a tool. Of course, corporations are going to/will howl, because their profits will fall due to the fact that slaves wont be making the goods and tech companies will have to pay 4xs the salary to US citizens rather than outsource the work to Indians overseas.

  3. I believe in the concept of unions. My father owned a factory,300 employees. They wanted to unionize , my father said what will unionizing get you? They said more money and job security. My father said how much more money I'll match it. Do you not feel secure in your job? we're pretty fair around here. I'm sure he offered them everything the union offered them ,they turned him down and unionized. While unionizing they slashed tires, cut locks, broke company equipment etc.
The union sure did get them a raise and promptly charged union dues about the amount of the Raze!.

  4. I WAS A UNION REP…WE GOT THE UNION IN…AFTER THE CONTRACT ENDED… THEY MOVED TO MEXICO…. WHAT NOW… NOW I HAVE MY OWN BUSINESS….

  5. Unions have to launch a national strike for a $15 minimum wage because its clear that the sellout Democratic Party is not going to deliver. The same should be said about fighting for the $2,000 stimulus check Biden reneged on.

  6. GOOD!
With increased pressure from threats of a forced $15/hr minimum wage hike nationwide in addition to militant unionization.
Companies WILL finally be forced to get off their lazy collective butts and hyper accelerate mass machine automation and artificial intelligence in the workplace.
    Which,
    To be brutally honest…
Really should have occurred bare minimum a decade ago.
    Right after the Great Recession.
Anything to force mass mechanization en'masse.

  7. Great interview, I'm so glad you did this. Often times union organizers aren't given the platform necessary to completely delve into the complexities of our struggle. As an organizer that wants to support unions this is gold. It gives me great insight into how we can get around certain legal barriers that may attempt to prevent union organizers from out sourcing the help they need from non union parties. Keep up the good work!

  8. Oh yeah like when your union boss pulls up in a $70,000 luxury car wearing $200 Italian shoes and a custom suit.

  9. @The Real News Network : A little after 16:15 or 16:20 to :25, Rand Wilson says that workers of Amazon, Doordash, Lift or Hoover aren't contractors, but, instead, they're workers, employees and that " they should not be second-class citizens ". I hope he's not meaning to imply that contractors are second-class citizens, for I'd definitely disagree about this. The USA should not operate as a CASTE society. That contractors don't have the rights that employees need to have to be unionized for work at companies they do work for is something I'd agree to, but they're just as first-class as employees are ; not getting the same benefits, but often working this into contracts by getting higher incomes, such as higher hourly wages when working as an hourly contractor, who often does the work 40 hours per week and sometimes more. Some contractors sometimes are more PRODUCTIVE than many employees doing the same kind of work are or do, and I know this first hand.

AS FOR AMAZON workers , those in Alabama are working on unionizing, and will be receiving ballots very shortly to vote, " Alabama Amazon workers to vote on unionizing– " (2:09), CBC News, 8 Feb 2021, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqmrMSTMU0k. Quote: " _Workers at an Amazon warehouse in Alabama could become the first to join a union as ballots go out to 5,800 employees on Monday. Workers there have long complained about working conditions. ".

  10. The unions are dead. But workers coming together to build collective power through ownership is alive and well. Read books written by Richard Wolf and others. Professor Wolf is also on YouTube.

  11. @JoeBiden @SpeakerPelosi are Republicans anyway. Dems. for years sought GOP vote and Wall Street donors. Dem. Senator Schumer describes picking up two or three Republicans for every Blue Collar supporter they lose: youtu.be/ClytGvP_Qe4

  12. @jimmy_dore’s local sport store with 5 employees is shut because of C-19. Why is the Amazon fulfilment centre housing a thousand workers (like chickens in a factory farm) still open? How to undermine Amazon from within and without? @iww @bullshit_jobs
