Flint, MI is hiring police officers for $11.25 an hour. Amazing right? Sure, if you want to deal with one of the most violent cities per capita while struggling to find clean drinking water.

Seriously? If people want cops to be PROFESSIONALS you’ll need to pay them a professional wage.

Also, there are AWESOME cops in Flint who are committed to serving there and their pay goes up after they get out of academy and probation, etc. So it’s not all doom and gloom.

  1. Spoke with a Flint Officer who clarified that once you're out of the academy it would ultimately be $18/hr. So that's GOOD news that it's not as bleak as it may seem. Given that many people put themselves through the academy at their own expense, not necessarily the worst option available.

  2. Many of our new officers use Flint as a stepping stone to get their feet wet. Then they go to the outlying cities for better pay and less danger. Living in Flint is no joke. Try calling 911 and see if an officer shows in a day or two if you are lucky. I'm co-chair on the South Side neighborhood crime watch and was a volunteer at the Sout Side mini police station before the city closed it earlier this year. I took calls, complaints, reports and did patrol neighborhoods on my own time and gas. My house before 2008 cost me $125K and as of today would sell for a max of $10k in this city. The water I won't even get started on other than say don't give it to your animals if you want them to live!!

  3. Then go get a MASTERS DEGREE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND WORK FOR THE FBI. BUT YOU CANT YOU WOULD GET FIRED BECAUSE OF YOUR BIG FAT MOUTH AND LACK OF RESPECT FOR YOUR ENEMIES. FROM THR DAUGHTER OF A FALLEN ARMY MILITARY POLICE DIA CIA OFFICER KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE

  4. I know for a fact vice does pretty well off prostitutes and drug dealers. You probably don't have that option though,it's a pretty exclusive club..plus your name would have to be Julio..shouldn't have said that,he'll probably kill me now too

  5. Wow. I actually make more at my grocery store.
EDIT: I am not a manager or forklift operator. I was recently hired.

  6. I can't help but feel this is part of the reason we see problems with officers resorting to violence as a first option and otherwise seeming completely unable to handle the stress of the job. The only people who would be willing to work for a wage that low are police academy dropouts who wouldn't even be qualified to work as security at the local Walmart. I'm even making over $18 an hour, and I work in a transit office filing papers and doing billing. Obviously not all cities are that low, but budget cuts obviously hit wages nationwide, and like any other job, the pay has to be comparable to the risks and skills needed for the job. If someone can get better pay for less work, they understandably will.

  7. im from mount pleasant, home of cmu. my parents and most people i ever went to flint with, we went to tony's on i75. the whole time my parents treated it like we were going to a warzone. when i was younger i was ashamed at how they acted. then one night i had to drive through flint to get home. huge difference driving through bad parts of flint at night and driving around 75.

  8. I have a friend that lives in Flint she tells me its a shitty place to live me ive lived in big cities like Dallas and ive seen the crime first hand out there all i can say is im happy i now live in a village in Nebraska of less than 350 people.
