Original Post:

Yesterday evening a video surfaced of an interaction between one of our officers and his canine partner during training. We understand how disturbing the video appears to many who view it and the range of emotions it creates. What the video doesn’t show is the moments prior, when the canine became aggressive towards his handler. We want to assure the public this incident is being evaluated in its entirety and will be investigated appropriately.

Our canine program is, and always has been an incredibly vital and important part of our policing. Entrusted with a difficult job, we rely on them to respond with precise skill leaving very little room for misjudgments. When we stray from this expectation, we are left vulnerable to an animal making decisions that could impact our communities safety. This underscored the importance of training and the value of a police dog responding appropriately to his handler in a given situation.

Although our canines appear to be pets, just like the ones we all have at home; they are quite different in many ways. If left unguided by a handler, the decisions they make could lead to the injury of the dog, an officer or an innocent community member. All training programs are not alike and need to be tailored to the needs of the specific dog and handler. This is generally achieved by a careful balance of physical discipline and reward based training. As with any training program, we are constantly evaluating our policies and procedures for needed improvement. We are still collecting all the information as it pertains to this incident for the purposes of that evaluation.

We want to assure our community that our canine program is one of the most loved in our department. Our four legged partners are far more than just a tool, they are a member of our PD family. For the many thousands of people we have met at demonstrations, school functions, church gatherings and other events; you have witnessed this love and devotion, and the incredible bond our canine teams share.

We appreciate your patience, understanding and grace as we navigate this incident.

  1. So no one took accountability in this.. "im not commenting on something I didn't see" then how the hell did the reporter see it before you?! No one can argue against it was unacceptable occurance yet no one is getting in trouble? The officer, the program???? the captain that spoke to ABC only made things worse

  2. Physical discipline is apart of their training? So they already know cops beat their dogs. From those words im not so sure this is an isolated incident. So MAYBE it's the training program that is flawed itself that causes cops to think abuse is apart of everyday life.

  3. All of these weaponized animals need to be removed from these thug's hands and retrained. The police have proven time aand time again, nationwide, that they no longer can be trusted…with anything. If they want a drug dog, get a beagle.

  4. If all that fluff they just spewed is true, why don’t we see more officers being held down and punched in the face to make them better cops.. What a pile of bullshit. This cop needs to be fired before he decides that a ten year old boy or girl isn’t listening enough and he does this to them. Oh but wait, the chief will say it’s in the best interest of the child to take a beating. Pieces of shit.

  5. Man leaving us hanging again …. hope that dog rips his face the flip off …. asshole!! Man this made me MAD.. who his this POS. Where was this

  6. I saw a news report where his superior said that this happened at the fire/police training center. The dog completed a search of a vehicle and gave a positive response for drugs… Ok, so then there must be sign out sheets for the drugs, right? The police don't just walk around with drugs on them, do they? Maybe that would be something to FOIA and if signed drugs forms aren't available it leads to further questions about whether they follow policy etc.

  7. The Vacaville Police Department teaches their officers to “Ground and Pound” as a disciplinary technique. Sad.

  8. Get a fucking life people, stop interjecting yourself into places you dont belong. Its NOT YOUR dog and its NOT your Police department so stop with the fake outrage already
