Arkansas State Police will be conducting an administrative review of the police troop that patrols the northwest part of the state, an agency spokesman said. The review follows several incidents from Troop L in Springdale, including a high-speed pursuit that resulted in a trooper striking a lieutenant with his vehicle, police spokesman Bill Sadler said. Trooper Alan Aiken’s report states he mistook Lt. John Overman of the State Police for a fleeing driver during the Jan. 11 pursuit. A video recording shows Aiken’s car striking Overman from behind and knocking him sideways to the ground. Last week, Overman filed a complaint against Aiken and said the trooper wasn’t taking the incident seriously and said a tire rolled over his lower legs and gave him “life-long” injuries.

The complaint is being investigated by the professional standards office, Sadler said. Other recentolfrt incidents include two civilian troop telecommunications operators that were suspended for several days without pay after they were accused of documenting sick leave as work time “on numerous occasions,” according to a report. The State Police Review Board found the accusations to be true. Sadler said commanders from administrative headquarters and Office of Professional Standards staff will meet with the troop’s supervisors and troopers to review “routine practices and procedures.” The review began earlier this year. Saddler said the review was requested by Capt. Lance King and other police officials. The troop patrols Benton, Carroll, Madison and Washington counties.

  1. Trooper gets hit by another troopers car. Trooper walks it off. Just another day in the life of an Arkansas trooper.

  2. I wouldn't say Trooper Aiken is fully at blame here, more than likely the description of the suspect wasn't give yet, and here comes this dude running AWAY from the incoming cruisers, yeah in the heat of the moment it is definitely possible to mistake the unmarked Lieutenant as the suspect. I don't think that Trooper Aiken should have immediately opted to bump the dude to the ground, but I also don't think the Lieutenant should have chose to jog right through the entrance where the cruisers where heading. Poor communication and decision making all the way around.

  3. “…and please tell the responding Trooper that a plainclothes officer is on the scene. I am armed & I am wearing _______ _______ and _________.”

See how helpful that would’ve been?

  4. Probably shouldn't run out in front of a moving car. Probably should have some sort of visible identification to keep from being shot by a fellow police officer. Ha.

  5. At least Aiken did not shoot the poor lieutenant when the lieutenant got up and started to run after getting runover by Aiken to chase the real bad guy.
