The man accused of shooting two Willoughby Hills police officers in Sept. 2017 amended his plea during a court hearing in Lake County on Monday morning. Timmothy Schmidt, 31, pleaded guilty to two counts of felonious assault on a peace officer and one count of resisting arrest. His initial charges for attempted aggravated murder on a peace officer were dropped as part of the plea deal. Police responded to Classic BMW on Som Center Road in 2017 after receiving a 911 call stating that a man, later identified as Schmidt, was yelling, swearing, and refusing to leave the dealership. He was at the dealership to have his car looked at when employees at Classic BMW noticed his behavior was becoming more alarming, according to the prosecutor.

Officers first made contact with Schmidt in the dealership service area. They then moved to the parking lot where the suspect pulled out a gun and began shooting. While speaking during the plea hearing, Schmidt admitted to being heavily medicated during the shooting. Officers Craig Anderson and Cory Planisek, of the Willoughby Hills Police Department, sustained gunshot wounds. Both officers survived the shooting. Schmidt was also shot during the incident. Schmidt has a long criminal history and had several warrants out for his arrest at the time of the shooting. Sentencing for Schmidt is scheduled for next month. Schmidt faces a maximum sentence of 45 and a half years in prison.

  1. For those wondering why the plea deal: Prosecutors tend to do what is easy. He ended up receiving 44.5 years — the maximum. If they went to trial there was a finite possibility that he'd win the case, which is undesirable. If convinced at trial he would not have been sentenced as harshly for the more serious charges, considering the officers were not seriously injured. It's a toss up on if the judge would give him an effective life sentence or something that releases him as a senior. So to save money, circumvent the possibility of a loss and not drag the victims through a trial he was offered lower charges. The outcome was probably the same.

  2. To save money. Going to court is expensive, and to save money, they are offered plea deals. They admit guilt, court dismissed, money saved.

  3. Really? They made a plea deal? It’s not like they were lacking evidence. They should’ve given him the death penalty. Or better yet, four more bullets on the scene. Shit the rest of the mag.
