3. any responsible gun owner knows better than to ever leave your firearm in your vehicle in fact the police tell you or more like beg you to not leave your firearm in your vehicle because they claim that is how a lot of firearms get into the hands of the wrong people, i haven't lived in california in almost 20 years but isn;t it the law there that if you own a firearm it has to be in locked secured safe or whatever unless you are taking it to the range to shoot ? I think the cop stopped by for a booty call and left his gun and vest in his car in plain sight and that is why the chief was there to try to clean it up also it sounds like the cop chased the supposed suspect down while off duty and got in a gun battle with him if the if the suspect was running away why didn;t he just let him go and call the police himself i know if someone breaks into my house and runs away i can't chase them down the street and shoot them i'd go to jail

4. O M G when we were allowed to have firearms here we had to have our guns in a gun cabinet in the house ans the ammunition stored in a different cabinet in a different area. (Inspected before we got our fire-arms license) …And cops can store the gun and ammunition in the same place which was a car and that I've heard cops saying to auditors,when they are moaning about them filming police cars, that people regularly break into their vehicles ???!! Jeebus crispy!!!!?

    California Penal Code § 25610(a)(1) requires people, other than hunters or fishermen going to and from an expedition (PEN 25640), to secure any firearm that is within a motor vehicle by locking it "in the vehicle's trunk or in a locked container in the vehicle," as long as it's not inside a utility or glove compartment (PEN 25400). But laws don't matter where police conduct is concerned.

23. This is a terrible and tragic incident, we must do everything we can to prevent this from happening again. We MUST have laws that prohibit law enforcement officers from carrying firearms…if they can't play nice with the toys they have they just shouldn't carry them anymore.

24. That gun was definitely not in trunk and probably not even the glove compartment. It was most likely in the door side pocket.
