On Friday, September 2, 2022, at approximately 11:54 am, an auto vs. pedestrians’ crash occurred in the 19th District at the intersection of 56th St. and Vine St., resulting in injuries to four pedestrians.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the owner of Unit #1 picked up two (2) day workers in the area of 18th St. and Ontario St. They then made their way to an auto store on the 5600 block of Vine St. to have repairs made by the street mechanics. The owner and one (1) of the day workers exited the vehicle. The keys were left in Unit #1 for the mechanics. The other day worker was left sleeping on the back seat of Unit #1. At some point, the suspect woke and took Unit #1 and jumped the parking block and crossed the sidewalk turning eastbound on Vine St. where he later struck four (4) pedestrians who were crossing Vine St. at 56th St. Unit #1 failed to stop and continued east on Vine St. The operator of Unit #1 abandoned the vehicle on the 5300 block of Race St. and continued on foot eastbound on Race St.

- Pedestrian #2: 5-year-old female Philadelphia, PA. Remains hospitalized in critical condition in ICU at CHOP.

- Pedestrian #4: 1-year-old male, Philadelphia, PA. Recovering at home.
