Is it possible that South America and especially Peru were discovered and settled by Mediterranean seafarers more than 2,000 years ago?

Mummies of the ancient Chachapoya might help to reveal this well-kept secret. In April 1997, german-peruvian anthropologist Dr. Peters Lerche is alarmed by in appeal for help: Grave-Robbers were plundering a previously unknown burial site dating to pre-columbian times. Lerche organized a rescue expedition. Many of the graves were devistated and mummies were left in the rain unprotected, so they performed a rescue excavation and manageed to transport over 200 mummies to the capital. Some of the mummies were examined. Although they died before Columbus arrived, they carry traces of diseases which had been assumed to arrive in South America with the Europeans.

Another hint at ancient Mediterraneans meeting the Chachapoya is their use of sling shots. Mummies hurt by sling shots during war time underline the fact that the Chachapoya used sling shots as their main weapon. Their sling shots differed completely from those of the other tribes in Peru. Compared to the traditional sling shot from Mallorca, the two are practically identical. Also, ancient majorcans as well as the Chachapoya weared their sling shots around their heads.
