The development of the first atomic bombs took scientists around the world decades. Nevertheless, in 1945, the United States successfully carried out the two largest atomic attacks in history on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, largely due to the U.S. Manhattan Project. The explosions not only led to Japan’s surrender and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians but also had profound consequences for many years later, such as cancer and deformities resulting from high levels of radiation.
