Is the Phaistos Disc a clever fake? In 1908, the Phaistos Disc was discovered by the Italian archaeologist Luigi Pernier in the ancient Cretan palace complexes of Phaistos. Since then, the disc has aroused scientific debates.
Among other experts, art historian Jerome Eisenberg is convinced that the disc is a fake. It has too many unique characteristics and it has nothing to with other known pieces of ancient mediterranean art. If the suspicions are correct, it would mean that archaeologist Luigi Pernier falsified the exploration record. In addition to his excavation activities, Pernier was also employed in Florence as an antiques inspector. While he was working in Florence, Luigi Pernier could have studied another ancient disc of mediterranean people before he discovered Phaistos. However, it is also conceivable that Luigi Pernier was tricked. To this day, it is not established who exactly was present during the excavation of the Phaisos Code.
Linguistic expert Gareth Owens believes that there might be a breakthrough soon. The texts on the disc can be deciphered and read – they express a minoan prayer. He likes to think that he is offering a reading which is more secure than past interpretations and hopes people will take advantage to move on to the next stage. Jerome Eisenberg refuses to be distracted by Gareth Owens decryption.
