The Weimar Republic’s brief existence was marred not only by Hitler’s influence but also by widespread discontent that fatally weakened the government. The extensive dissatisfaction made the republic unsustainable in the long term, creating vulnerability for attacks by extremists from both ends of the political spectrum. Without a robust democratic unity, the potential for communists to seize power loomed large.
